Lectio Divina

By S. Bridgette Powers, OSB, December 2, 2025

This Advent, we are delighted to share the prayer, lectio, and work of four Sisters of St. Benedictโ€™s Monastery in St. Joseph, MN. Just down the road from Saint Johnโ€™s Abbey, they met regularly to read and pray, using the traditional Benedictine practice of Lectio Divina, with the Sunday Gospel.

As we anticipate this coming Sundayโ€™s Gospel reading (Advent 2), we offer this reflection from S. Bridgette Powers, who reminds us that St. John the Baptist calls us to both wait and prepare for the Lord.ย How do we wait?

Obsculta Preaching Initiative takes its name from the first word of The Rule, โ€œListen,โ€ grounding us in our Benedictine charism and our Christian call to prepare our hearts to hear the word of God, and to respond in love to those whom we encounter.

Sister Bridgette Powers, OSB, graduated from the St. Johnโ€™s School of Theology with a Master of Divinity. She entered St. Benedictโ€™s Monastery in August 2015 and now works at the Spirituality Center and directs the Benedictine Friends program.
