Newman Declared Doctor of Church

By Staff, November 3, 2025

In a historic moment during the Jubilee of the World of Education, Pope Leo XIV formally declared St. John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church, one of the highest honors in Catholic tradition. The declaration took place during a Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints this past weekend in St. Peterโ€™s Square, attended by thousands of educators, students, and dignitaries, including representatives from the Church of England and the British government.

Newman, a 19th-century theologian, poet, and convert from Anglicanism, becomes the 38th Doctor of the Church, joining the ranks of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Therese of Lisieux. His writings on conscience, doctrinal development, and the nature of education have long influenced both Catholic and Anglican thought.

The declaration affirms Newmanโ€™s enduring relevance in an age of information overload and moral complexity. As Pope Leo noted, โ€œLife shines when we discover within ourselves the truth that we are called by God, have a vocation, have a mission.โ€
