Last week, Pope Francis honored the 150th anniversary of the death of Dom Prosper-Louis-Pascal Guéranger, OSB (1805-1875), the founder of the French Benedictine Congregation of Solesmes. In his message to Abbot Geoffroy Kemlin OSB, President of the Congregation, the Pope highlighted Dom Guéranger’s significant contributions to the Church.
Dom Guéranger was instrumental in restoring Benedictine monastic life in France after the disruptions of the French Revolution. He was a staunch opponent of the Gallicanist movement, which sought greater independence for the French Church from the Papacy. His efforts in rediscovering the liturgy as the language of the Church and an expression of its faith positioned him as a forerunner of the modern liturgical movement. His extensive writings, particularly “The Liturgical Year,” aimed to make the beauty and richness of the liturgy accessible to all.
Pope Francis emphasized two aspects of Dom Guéranger’s legacy that are especially relevant today: fidelity to the Holy See, particularly in liturgical matters, and spiritual fatherhood. The Pope praised Dom Guéranger’s dedication to guiding souls in their search for God, noting that his gentle and joyful trust in divine providence influenced not only monks and nuns but also laypeople who sought his counsel.
Pope Francis expressed his hope that Dom Guéranger’s example would inspire a renewed love for the Church’s liturgical tradition and a deeper unity with the Successor of Peter. He prayed that Dom Guéranger’s legacy would continue to bear fruits of holiness among the faithful and remain a living witness to the fruitfulness of monastic life at the heart of the Church.
