On February 27, the Grammy-award winning Fisk Jubilee Singers will perform at the Saint Bede Theater at Saint Meinrad in conjunction with a course on Sacred Music and Race co-taught by Dr. Karen Shadle (Director of Worship for the Archdiocese of Louisville) and Archbishop Shelton Fabre of Louisville, formerly chairman of the USCCB Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism.
As Saint Meinrad’s website describes, the Fisk Jubilee Singers have their origins in 1871, a small choir begun at Fisk University, the first university offering a liberal arts education to men and women of all races. The choir, which “initially faced surprise, curiosity, and hostility from audiences,” is now well-revered for their excellent musicality and their introduction of African-American spirituals to choral music in the United States.
