GOSPEL COMMUNION: 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 25, 2022 : 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

For today’s antiphon, the Collegeville Composers turned to the 2nd Reading, specifically 1 Tim 6: 12 and 14. The eternal life that we are called to take hold of in Holy Communion reminds us, too, of the eternal life in the bosom of Abraham enjoyed by Lazarus in today’s Gospel parable, as opposed to the eternal flames merited by the rich man.

The musical idiom of this antiphon is neo-Byzantine in flavour, with superimposed verses from 1 Peter 2 and Philippians 2 chanted to a single note above the first half of the antiphon.

This setting has also been successfully used in Holy Week, especially as an extended Communion processional during the Chrism Mass.

An extract from the CD recording We Will Follow You, Lord will be found here.
