GOSPEL COMMUNION: Trinity Sunday

June 12 2022 : Trinity Sunday

The first phrase of today’s antiphon derives from the end of the 2nd Reading, Romans 5:5:

…hope does not disappoint,
because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

In reflecting on this passage, and bearing in mind the Solemnity of the Trinity, the Collegeville Composers were additionally drawn to Romans 8:9-11:

But you are not in the flesh;
on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,
the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,
the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also,
through his Spirit that dwells in you.

which thus forms the inspiration for the second half of the antiphon.

In Communion, the love of God is poured into our hearts in a most tangible way, and, if we are open to him, the Spirit of Christ will dwell within us and inform everything we do.

One of the suggested options for verses in the Missal is Ephesians 1:3-10. The Collegeville Composers looked a little further in the text and provided 1:3-14 for use here; verses 3–10 mention the Father and the Son and verses 11 through 14 mention the Holy Spirit. It didn’t seem right to omit the Holy Spirit on Trinity Sunday!

A demo recording will be found here.
