GOSPEL COMMUNION: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 19 2021 : 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Neither of the antiphons in the Roman Missal connects with the readings, so the Collegeville Composers Group borrowed part of the alternate antiphon for next Sunday:

By this we came to know the love of God:
that Christ laid down his life for us;
so we ought to lay down our lives for one another.
(The reference given is John 3:16, but the relationship is fairly remote)

after reflecting on these words from today’s Gospel reading:

The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him…. (Mark 9:31)

If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all…. (Mark 9:35)

Following suggestions for next Sunday’s antiphon in the 1998 Antiphonal and 2010 Antiphonary, verses are from 1 Peter 2:21-24 and Philippians 2:6-11, digging deeper into the theme of Christ suffering and dying for us in order that we might have healing and life.
