Liborius Lumma Appointed to Catholic-Protestant Dialogue

Liborius Lumma (credt: private)The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity has appointed PrayTell author Liborius Lumma to the dialogue commission between the Roman Catholic Church and the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE). The commission will start its work in the next months on the basis of previous exploratory talks during the 2010s.

The forthcoming commission represents a diplomatic novelty: For the first time, the Catholic Church is starting a theological dialogue on an official worldwide level, which is not conducted bilaterally but with an association of various denominational communities. The CPCE includes all Lutheran, Reformed, and United (i.e. Lutheran-Reformed) churches that have joined the Leuenberg Agreement of 1973.

Congratulations to Liborius, and kudos to the Council for making this appointment. I cannot imagine a choice more likely to be judicious, well-grounded, and creative in seeking effective solutions to long-standing problems. Prayers and best wishes to the dialogue commission!
