December 22: O Rex Gentium

O Rex gentium et desideratus earum, lapisque angularis, qui facis utraque unum: veni et salva hominem, quem de limo formasti.

O King of all peoples and their desire, corner stone that makes two sides one: come and save humanity that you formed from mud.

O Sovereign One

beyond all sovereignties

final fulfillment of all human desiring,

how I long for you!

In you alone

earth and heaven become one.

Come and bring heaven to earth,

to that earth from which you formed humanity.

December 22, and three more shopping days until Christmas. I am beginning to get tired of Bed Bath & Beyond. One piece does capture my attention, however, if only because its name reminds me of a theme in today’s O-Antiphon. Earth Therapeutics Moisturizing Gloves and Socks promise to “help relieve dry hands and feet simply and affordably.” The “simply” includes an overnight procedure: “Simply apply your favorite lotion to the affected area before bedtime and put gloves or socks on. Leave on overnight for optimal results.” What is truly simple is that one size fits all. I am unable to see what is “Earth Therapeutic” about all this, but I am struck with the O-Antiphon’s sense that the final fulfillment of all human desiring is to weave heaven and earth into one. Maybe the Earth Therapeutics Moisturizing Gloves and Socks reflect a faint memory of the depth of this human desiring?

Only one more O-Antiphon and two more shopping days left to ponder such questions.
