Music at Mass with the Pope in Azerbaijan

Here’s the video of Mass this morning in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the papal trip. There’s some music you probably recognize.

Check out the processional song:

Congrats, David.

Not sure, what is going on here, not much joy with the singing, the Pope looks so sad and as if he doesn’t want to be there. Poor old fellow.

I agree. The pope looks really exhausted and has aged tremendously in the last year or two. There is not even an attempt at a smile. One wonders how much longer he will last.

  3. I don’t think Pope Francis has ever been one to smile much during Mass. He always strikes me as remarkably sober.

American liturgical music is quite popular in many parts of the world – possibly because of its wide dissemination with the internet, etc. Even older folk numbers that a few on this forum with remember can be heard. I have heard these two songs and others translated and sung in at least 3 other languages (same tune more or less, only slight adaptions to match the contours of the other language)
