Paul Colloton, OSFS Resigns from the NPM National Staff

In the June edition of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians’ (NPM) newsletter, the Pastoral Music Notebook, Paul Colloton announced his resignation from the NPM National Staff. Below is his letter to the members of NPM.

npc

We read in Ecclesiastes 3:1: โ€œFor everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.โ€ To the list included in verses 2โ€“8 I add: a time to serve NPM as Director of Continuing Education and a time to move on.

It has been my privilege to serve the National Association of Pastoral Musicians as Director of Continuing Education for almost 13.5 years. During my time of transfer from the Order of Preachers to the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, I was asked to engage in Oblate ministries that involved more preaching, presiding, and teaching about spirituality than I had been doing prior to that time. Preaching days of reflection and teaching were part of my ministry as NPMโ€™s Director of Continuing Education, but the needs of the Association required that I engage in more administration than had been the case when I was originally invited to come and work for the Association.

It has become increasingly clear to me that I draw more energy from the pastoral and educational portions of my job and life than the administrative. While I have gifts for administration, it does not feed my heart and spirit as much as preaching, presiding, offering spiritual direction, teaching, and giving workshops. Thus, it seems to be a good time for me to move on and explore how I can better use those gifts. The fact that NPM is in its own time of transition, while awaiting a new president, seems to make this opportune for NPM as well.

I thank Rev. Virgil Funk for inviting me to come to NPM. I also thank the staff members with whom I have had the privilege to work over the years, who have affirmed and challenged me and brought joy into my life. My thanks as well to all those members who have welcomed my ministry, especially those who have invited me to serve their communities through workshops, retreats, and visits.

My resignation from the NPM National Staff will be effective August 31, 2014. I hope to be of assistance until then and to continue to support the work of NPM in the future. And I hope to see many of you in St. Louis!

Paul, I hope our physical paths cross soon and I enjoy our virtual paths crossing. Maybe your OSFS journey might bring you close to the province located near me so I can enjoy your great preaching I’ve heard and seen at the few NPM conventions I’ve been to. Ad multos annos.

Blessings on your transition and new beginnings, Paul! I know you leave behind many who will remember your work at NPM with gratitude. I am happy to count myself among those who have been touched by your ministry there.

For more than a decade, I’ve had the great pleasure of experiencing Paul’s genius as a preacher and musician. Many can administer; but few minister with his skill. The church comes out ahead of the game.

Thanks for juggling the chainsaws all these years, Paul.

I am delighted that you have been able to discern that God is calling you to particular forms of service to the Church and world. As one who serves as an artist-in-residence and a research-fellow, I can truly appreciate your joy in being able to spend less of your time in administrative tasks. I hope our paths will cross at the NPM convention this summer. Blessings on the new directions in your life!

I once had a classmate who opined that the real reason Pharaoh let Moses and the Israelites go free is that he learned the 11th plague was going to be meetings and the 12th paperwork! (Papyruswork, maybe?)

We know that wherever the Spirit sends you soaring next is a place that will be blessed by your gifts of faithfulness, joyfulness, and hopefulness, as we have been blessed by them through your ministry with NPM!

Paul, I have privately thanked you for your many, good years of service to NPM, but I also want to do it publicly. You have been a gift to NPM, and I wish the best in your future work.

  12. Paul, my beloved friend, what a beautiful letter. You are a good and faithful servant! What a gift it was to meet you earlier this year. Hope to see you, although not in St. Louis, but soon again!

As you move forward in your own aggiornamento, know you have the love, gratitude and support of a wide community of faith who you’ve helped to shape and nuture. I hope to meet you again one day, not during a busy convention but in a place where good conversation, table sharing and some good laughs are part of the encounter. Be well my friend. You’ve helped me in ways you can never fully know. I’m grateful.

Your resignation is ICC’s blessing !!! I was at mass this morning and had to come do my research on who this Fr. Paul is. NPMs loss is one parish’s gain. You said… “It has become increasingly clear to me that I draw more energy from the pastoral and educational portions of my job and life than the administrative.” AS my kid, one of your altar servers likes to say….. sooooooooo happy!!!! Looking forward to energy. It will be reciprocated tenfold. God Bless.
