Many argue thatย Lumen Gentium,ย Vatican II’s Constitution on the Church, stands as the jewel in the Council’s crown. Pope John XXIII convened the twenty-firstย ecumenical council with the hope that the Catholic Church would engage in “aggiornamento” or updating. Central to his vision was the idea of updating the Church by “reading the signs of the times.”
To celebrate the fiftiethย anniversary of this critical document, Bishop Madden will reflect onย Lumen Gentium’sย significance at the council, the way that it creates important opportunities for dialogue, and Pope Francis’ use of key images from this text as he leads the Church into the future.
Bishop Denis Madden, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, is chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.
