Many argue thatย Lumen Gentium,ย Vatican II’s Constitution on the Church, stands as the jewel in the Council’s crown. Pope John XXIII convened the twenty-firstย ecumenical council with the hope that the Catholic Church would engage in “aggiornamento” or updating. Central to his vision was the idea of updating the Church by “reading the signs of the times.”

To celebrate the fiftiethย anniversary of this critical document, Bishop Madden will reflect onย Lumen Gentium’sย significance at the council, the way that it creates important opportunities for dialogue, and Pope Francis’ use of key images from this text as he leads the Church into the future.

Bishop Denis Madden, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, is chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

    Thank you for this talk. It was very easy to hear and understand.

    He mentioned several times the work and a book by a priest in Baltimore who seems to be applying some of the ideas from the Protestant mega-churches rather successfully but not without some flack from his fellow priests

    It would be helpful to have a full citation of the book.

    Jack, The book that Bishop Madden was probably referring to is Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, and Making Church Matter, written by Michael White and Tom Corcoran. It is available on Amazon, and is a worthwhile read.

    I was not able to see the live-stream, because as a church musician it was Thursday night – I of course was at practice.

    Fr. Ruff – is it possible for the stream to be archived/uploaded for viewing in the future?

      @George Miller – comment #2:

      Thanks, the only word I could remember was Rebuilt so you have the right book.
