Sister Eleanor Bernstein, rest in peace

Sr. Eleanor Bernstein, CSJ,ย died in Cleveland, OH, on March 12. She was known to manyย through her work as director of the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy, and throughย her publications concerning prayer. Here are some of the highlights of her obituary, which appeared in the New Orleans Times-Picayune:

She was Director of Liturgy at Our Lady of Divine Providence in Metairie, LA and Director of Liturgy and RCIA at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles, LA before becoming Director of the Center for Pastoral Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame from 1988 to 2002. She was elected to congregational leadership and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio for five years where she assisted in the reconfiguration process which drew seven communities of Sisters of St. Joseph into one Congregation of St. Joseph. Sister Eleanor was a skilled writer who edited a complete set of office books, Daily Prayer, Daily Bread, used both by sisters throughout the Congregation and others. She had begun ministering on the staff at the Magnificat Center in Wichita, KS, until serious health issues necessitated her move to Cleveland where she was enrolled in the Cleveland Clinic. In 2011 Ave Maria Press published her book, Praying Our Lives: A Woman’s Treasury of Catholic Prayer.

Wake services will be held Tuesday, March 20th, at St Aloysius Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 9 to 11 am. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am. Reverend Thomas Ranzino will be the principal celebrant.

May she rest in peace, and may all who mourn her passing be comforted.

A lovely lady whom I first met in 1984 at Notre Dame (she was already there before becoming director in ’88). Eleanor was delightful, and carried her learning very lightly. Glad that Tom Ranzino is giving her a good send-off!

Rita, thank you for this important news. I did not know Sister Eleanor but many of her congregation on Rocky River Drive are very dear to me. It seems that she made a very significant contribution to the proper implementation of the Second Vatican Council. I feel very much indebted to her.
