Pope to hold peace summit

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Benedict said on Saturday he will host a summit of world religious leaders in the city of Assisi in October to discuss how they can promote world peace.

The meeting will take place on the 25th anniversary of a similar encounter hosted by the late Pope John Paul in 1986. That historic meeting in the birthplace of St Francis was attended by Muslim and Jewish leaders as well as heads of many other religions.

Pray Tell prediction: this time there won’t be any “common prayer” or “common reflection” by the leaders of various religions which might give the slightest hint of syncretism.

  1. I saw on another blog great consternation about this. But given the fact that there is so much religious strife in the world, this is a very wise move and more interfaith meetings are needed. In terms of common prayer, the first year anniversary of 9/11 we had a interfaith service in a former Catholic Church in Augusta. Working out the details with leaders of Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Unitarians, and some others, was a bit of a struggle. We decided that each leader would offer a prayer in their religious tradition and that all common responses would be neutral. We did agree on singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” and “America.”

Disappointed that you chose to take the Holy Father’s generous effort and try to make a negative political point out of it.

Shouldn’t the Holy Father attempt to avoid syncretism? This takes away from his olive branch to other religions how?

Huh? I merely said that he’d be very careful to avoid syncretism. Not one syllable of evaluation yeah or nay, nothing trying to make a negative political point of it. How did you read that into my words?
