The article says nothing about the music…. just the musicians opinions of the new translation and a vague admonition to plan ahead. Not much there to comment on.

It was pretty positive. I like the idea to introduce some of the ordinaries early.

Well, maybe not too early. Given that the final version of the text (which got work-in-progress-recognitio some weeks back) isn’t available yet (later this week, I’m hearing from informed sources on two continents) it might still be premature to introduce anything.

Here’s one error in the article- it says that the congregation for Sacraments and Divine Worship is still doing final editing and when the in recognitio is granted , they will send the final version to the bishops conferences who will decide when the revised order of the Mass will be published. The problem is, the official USCCB website for the Roman Missal, 3d, has already indicated that the revised order of the Mass has already been given the final in recognitio.

Not quite, Tim. There is a final text with recognitio – this is all the texts common to the whole English-speaking world. But the fact is that the Holy See continues to fiddle with texts after granting the recognitio – as Paul Inwood reported on the GIRM mess in an earlier post, and is happening now with the missal. Many eyes have seens the ‘recognitio’ text and have reported on its many changes to the 2008 Order of Mass (which has recognitio). What the conferences do NOT have yet is a recognitio text along with all their national propers (eg Tekakwitha or Thanksgiving int he US). It is only when a conference gets everything, including its national propers, that the conference has the most up-to-date version of the entire missal with recognitio. It is only then they can set their implementation date. Experience shows that Rome can keep changing texts, no matter when or how often Rome grants recognitio to a text. So it’s not an error in the article.

Then why on the USCCB website on the does it say that final in recognitio has already been given?

Tim, I’m trying to decode your idiosyncratic English. If I understand you rightly, here is my response.

As I said: the Order of Mass got the recognitio in 2008. But that text is now being changed. The entire missal (minus national propers) got recognitio last March. But that text is now being changed. National conferences don’t act on this text with recognitio anyway: they set implementation date when the get the whole missal -including national propers – with recognitio.
