{"id":9795,"date":"2011-06-01T00:32:42","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T05:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=9795"},"modified":"2011-09-28T14:26:20","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T19:26:20","slug":"was-vatican-ii-a-rupture-with-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/01\/was-vatican-ii-a-rupture-with-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"Was Vatican II a &#8220;rupture&#8221; with tradition?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we approach fifty years from the opening of the Second Vatican Council, theologians continue to debate the best way to characterize the dramatic renewal in Roman Catholic life, liturgy, and teachings to which the council led. \u00a0But was this renewal \u2013 or transformation, or change \u2013 so great as to cause a \u201crupture\u201d with the tradition of the Roman Catholic church?\u00a0 Ironically, there are &#8220;progressives&#8221; and &#8220;traditionalists&#8221; who would agree that there was in fact a rupture.<\/p>\n<p>On his blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/?eng=y\" target=\"_blank\">Chiesa<\/a>, journalist Sandro Magister provides an overview of three views of the council:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Vatican II was a rupture with Tradition \u2013 and a wonderful thing<\/strong>. Vatican II was a new beginning, which led to a complete transformation of the church. According to this view, there is no problem in saying that there is a break with tradition \u2013 because there is a more important continuity with the true teachings of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Among the proponents of this view is the American ecclesiologist Joseph Komonchak. Many like-minded scholars are affiliated with or published through the Institute for Religious Studies in Bologna (and hence are often dubbed \u201cThe School of Bologna.\u201d) Some of them even claim Pope Benedict\u2019s interpretation are in line with their beliefs (although the pope himself would not agree.)<\/p>\n<p>For more on this line of thought, see <a href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/articolo\/181668?eng=y\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Council was an &#8216;Historic Transition.'&#8221; <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/articolo\/181668?eng=y\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Vatican II was a rupture with Tradition \u2013 and a grave error<\/strong>. While theologians who hold this view usually accept the authority of the council, they do not see the council\u2019s teaching as infallible \u2013 bur rather, as a source of errors. As one example, the document <em>Dignitatis Humanae <\/em>allows for freedom of religion \u2013 something explicitly condemned by past popes (as recently as 1864).<\/p>\n<p>Among the proponents of this this view is Roberto de Mattei. He notes that the council was a pastoral council, not a dogmatic one.\u00a0 It must be evaluated by how its documents are in accord with Tradition, which, following Mattei, is not \u201ca part\u201d but rather \u201cthe whole\u201d of the Church. And, in his opinion, the documents of Vatican II did not follow the official magisterium of the church, and thus are in error.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Benedict XVI has called some who hold this view &#8220;anti-conciliarist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For more on this line of thought, see <a href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/articolo\/1347794?eng=y\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The Church is Infallible, but Not Vatican II.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Vatican II is not a rupture with tradition. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taking a middle view, Pope Benedict XVI would deny that here has been any rupture in the church. He describes the proper reception of Vatican II as a \u201chermeneutic of renewal within continuity.\u201d \u00a0He notes that there is an \u201capparent\u201d discontinuity between historical decisions and Vatican II, but insists that it is one and the same church.<\/p>\n<p>Much has been written on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/speeches\/2005\/december\/documents\/hf_ben_xvi_spe_20051222_roman-curia_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Benedict\u2019s 2005 Christmas address to the Roman curia<\/a> when he reflected on the interpretation of the Second Vatican Council and its interpretation.
