“The way we pray forms the way we believe”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Pastoral letter<\/a> from the Bishops of England and Wales on the introduction of the New Missal is, in many ways, a good letter in what it says.<\/p>\n

It is the glaring omission that requires comment.<\/p>\n

Might we not have expected some tacit acknowledgement of the difficulties experienced by many in recent months as news of the detail reached the people?<\/p>\n

The silence of the hierarchy during this time has been deafening, their leadership nominal.<\/p>\n

There is almost the feeling in this Pastoral that the storm has blown itself out, now this is what you must do.<\/p>\n

The most telling line relates to the Latin adage (which I trust is a literal translation):<\/p>\n

“There is an old adage in Latin which states that the way we pray forms the way we believe.\u00a0\u00a0So words and language are important for the\u00a0 teaching and handing on of the faith.”<\/p>\n

Isn’t this precisely the argument that many of us have used in our critical comment of the new translation?<\/p>\n

Words do matter, and that is why pain is being felt.<\/p>\n
