{"id":9589,"date":"2011-05-21T15:40:30","date_gmt":"2011-05-21T20:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=9589"},"modified":"2011-05-22T14:03:27","modified_gmt":"2011-05-22T19:03:27","slug":"icels-missal-chants-in-neumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/21\/icels-missal-chants-in-neumes\/","title":{"rendered":"ICEL&#8217;s missal chants in neumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicasacra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Musica Sacra<\/a><\/em>, the website of the Church Music Association of America, offers ICEL&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/musicasacra.com\/pdf\/ICELchants_neumes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">English missal chants in 4-line square-note Gregorian notation<\/a>\u00a0for the Order of Mass.<\/p>\n<p>ICEL itself offers these chants along with all the other English chants (prefaces, antiphons for particular days, etc.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icelweb.org\/musicfolder\/openmusic.php\" target=\"_blank\">at its website<\/a>. ICEL provided the chants to\u00a0the English-speaking bishops&#8217; conferences in 5-line notation. ICEL considered offering both 4-line and 5-line, and even planned on that for a time. Then it was decided that this would be a waste of ICEL time and resources, since no conference would elect to publish 4-line chant in its liturgical books anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Then the question arose: What about folks who want to publish the missal chants in 4-line in their own publications?\u00a0Would that be permitted, though it&#8217;s not the &#8216;approved&#8217; ICEL notation? Yes, the thought was, there&#8217;s no reason not to allow that. And if some want to add in episemas, it&#8217;d be hard to disallow that, since the Holy See allowed the Solesmes monks to add in their rhythmic signs to the Vatican edition back in 1908.<\/p>\n<p>The CMAA 4-line looks very attractive to my eye. No episemas, BTW.
