{"id":9518,"date":"2011-05-18T15:11:20","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T20:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=9518"},"modified":"2011-05-18T15:14:51","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T20:14:51","slug":"lamb-of-god-son-of-god-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/18\/lamb-of-god-son-of-god-not\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Lamb of God&#8230;&#8221; &#8211; &#8220;Son of God&#8230;&#8221; &#8211; NOT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Pray Tell\u00a0<\/em> reader Jeane Marie Miles writes with the latest information on the legality of troping the Lamb of God \u2013 that is, using other Christological invocations to extend the \u201cLamb of God\u201d as needed to cover the liturgical action of the Fraction Rite.\u00a0The\u00a0\u00a0worship office in her diocese, Kansas City-St. Joseph, just received an email reply from the USCCB on the topic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The USCCB is aware that there is a discrepancy between the instructions in <em>Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship<\/em> and instructions in the new Roman Missal on this subject. <em>STL<\/em> says at 188:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The supplicatory chant Agnus Dei accompanies the Fraction Rite. It is, \u201cas a rule, sung by the choir or cantor with the congregation responding; or it is, at least, recited aloud. This invocation accompanies the fraction and, for this reason, may be repeated as many times as necessary until the rite has reached its conclusion, the last time ending with the words dona nobis pacem (grant us peace).\u201d [GIRM 83] When the Agnus Dei is sung repeatedly as a litany, Christological invocations with other texts may be used. In this case, the first and final invocations are always Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says at 83:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The supplication <em>Agnus Dei<\/em>, is, as a rule, sung by the choir or cantor with the congregation responding; or it is, at least, recited aloud. This invocation accompanies the fraction and, for this reason, may be repeated as many times as necessary until the rite has reached its conclusion, the last time ending with the words <em>dona nobis pacem <\/em>(<em>grant us peace<\/em>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The GIRM doesn&#8217;t say anything, yay or nay, about troping, which is now being interpreted to mean\u00a0GIRM does not permit it.<\/p>\n<p>According the USCCB official, because the new Missal is the more important document, it trumps the instructions in the USCCB document <em>Sing to the Lord<\/em>.\u00a0 The USCCB will therefore have to re-write their regulations on this subject and\/or revise <em>Sing to the Lord<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom line: no text other than \u201cLamb of God\u201d may be used to accompany the Fraction Rite;
