Pope Benedict plans to travel to his homeland, Germany, this coming September 22-25. Today\u2019s news has a few challenges for him.<\/p>\n

First, there are markedly fewer priesthood students<\/a> in Germany. In 2010, 126 men began priesthood studies, which is 20% fewer than 2009 and 40% fewer than 10 years ago. In all, 792 men in Germany are studying for the priesthood, which is 7% less than last year and 27% less than 10 years go. In Germany in 2010, 80 were ordained to the priesthood for dioceses, and 16 for orders, which is about half the numbers 10 years ago. The Center for Pastoral Work for Vocations (\u201cZentrum f\u00fcr Berufungspastoral\u201d \u2013 any suggestions on how to translate this?!) believes that the sexual abuse scandal is playing a role in these declines. Potential candidates are \u201cconfronted with accusations about their psychosexual maturity\u201d more than in the past. Also important is the question of how large an area a future priest will be responsible for with declining numbers of priests.<\/p>\n

Second, the president of the\u00a0Protestant Church in Hessen and Nassau, Volker Jung, has called for the admission of all baptized Christians<\/a> to a common celebration of the Lord\u2019s Supper. He is hoping for \u201cclear ecumenical signs\u201d in this direction from the upcoming visit of Pope Benedict XVI in Germany. He upheld baptism as the \u201cfoundational bond of unity.\u201d Current discipline in the Catholic Church does not allow for such open admission of the baptized to Communion.<\/p>\n
