A reflection on change<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Disciples who dare to ascend that mountain
\ndo not come down unscathed.
\nThis procession of pilgrims, the church on the way,
\ntransfigured, slowly, surely,
\nby that ineffable, indescribable light,
\nso bright it burns their eyes, like staring into the sun.
\nFrom then on, every person they see
\nbears the subtle silhouette of the Savior.<\/p>\n

Christ leads us up the mountains of our daily lives
\nto witness his glory once again
\n\u2014too often shrouded
\nby clouds of despair, poverty, pettiness,
\ncompetition, division, discord\u2014
\nand we shield our eyes and turn away.
\nToo long we\u2019ve expected
\ntransformation to happen at the altar alone,
\nyet not in ourselves.<\/p>\n

But every once in a while, despite our fog,
\nthe Spirit breaks through,
\nand we glimpse what Merton saw
\non the corner of Fourth and Walnut.
\nIf only we would realize that we are all
\nwalking around shining like the sun,
\nthen would we see the gate of heaven everywhere.<\/p>\n

Lord, it is good to be here on this mountaintop,
\nwhere your glory is so clearly manifest
\nin song and silence, in music and movement;
\nin power of words and strength in numbers,
\nand in prophecy of youth and dreams of elders.
\nBut save us, Lord, from the complacency
\nof staying here to merely build booths
\ninstead of letting you build us
\ninto the tent in which your glory dwells.<\/em><\/p>\n

For you did not create us to place our hopes
\non what is transitory\u2014
\non words or ways of worship,
\non what I like and on what I feel like doing.
\nYou fashioned us to follow you
\ndown the mountain of Calvary,
\ndown into the depths of human joys and griefs
\nto name and proclaim the radiant grace
\nshining on those whom we do not always recognize
\nas you,
\nto announce that here, indeed,
\nis God\u2019s beloved.<\/em><\/p>\n

Come then, let us act fearlessly, eyes wide open to mystery.
\nCome, let us be ready to see Christ revealed
\nin enemies transformed into partners, in stranger become friend,
\nwhere empty buckets overflow, clouded eyes are cleared,
\nand lifeless hearts beat once again.
\nTransfiguration is everywhere, waiting for you to enter in,
\nthat you may become what you were created to be.
\nSo let go, hold on, and trust, for Christ alone is our hope
\nin whose image we are being transformed
\nfrom glory into glory, glory into glory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
