From Robert Mickens\u2019 excellent column in the Tablet, \u201cLetter from Rome\u201d comes the following story this week. –ed.<\/em><\/p>\n

The systematic reinterpretation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council began in Rome well before the Council Fathers even headed back to their dioceses around the world. And it continues to this day.<\/p>\n

One of the more recent examples came last month when Mgr Guido Marini, the 46-year-old master of papal liturgical ceremonies, gave a lecture at the Opus Dei-run Holy Cross University here in town.<\/p>\n

In an apparent effort to justify the return of lavish pre-conciliar liturgical costumes and furnishings that has marked his tenure, the Genoa native gave a new reading to an old Vatican II document.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mysterious and real presence of Christ in the liturgy\u201d, he said, \u201crequires of the liturgical language the splendour of noble simplicity, according to the diction of Vatican Council II.\u201d The splendour of noble simplicity? \u201cI spoke of the splendour of noble simplicity because that\u2019s the complete expression used by the Council Fathers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Actually, it is not. \u201cRitus nobili simplicitate fulgeant<\/em>\u201d is the complete expression found in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/em>, no. 34). It means, \u201cLet the rites radiate a noble simplicity\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some English translations say the rites \u201cshould be distinguished by a noble simplicity\u201d. That\u2019s because fulgeant <\/em>is a subjunctive verb.<\/p>\n

How could one of the Vatican\u2019s chief advocates for more Latin in the liturgy make such an elementary mistake? Sacrosanctum Concilium <\/em>(no. 124) says \u201cnoble beauty rather than mere sumptuous display\u201d should be the mark of \u201csacred vestments and ornaments\u201d. However, Mgr Marini did not appear to quote that part of the document in his lecture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
