At the abbey church here in Urbe<\/em>, where I am wont to hide behind a pillar and \u201chear Mass\u201d on major feastdays, the celebrant of this morning\u2019s conventual Mass, Ordinary Form, Latin, chanted (in the impeccable style acquired during his youthful days at Solesmes), the Preface of the Annunciation.<\/p>\n

Hearing a number of \u201cflagged words\u201d in that Latin Preface, I decided (although Lenten penance is suspended for this Solemnity) to check the \u201cFinal Text\u201d against the ill-fated 2008 translation prepared by ICEL. I suspect the readers of Pray Tell <\/em>will be as surprised as I was at the text that obtained the recognitio<\/em> of the Holy See. (Note: in the posting of the Latin text, I have rearranged\u00a0 its phrases, the better to show how each translation renders them.)<\/p>\n

PREFACE OF THE ANNUNCIATION CHART<\/a><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 In their zeal to \u201cde-inclusify\u201d the 2008 translation, the Vox Clara<\/em> team has inexplicably lost the Archangel Gabriel!<\/p>\n

2. Perficeret veritas<\/em> is surely rendered more adequately as \u201cfulfilled\u201d and not simply \u201ccome about,\u201d a pedantic expression if ever there was one, and one that does not convey that in the mystery of the Lord\u2019s incarnation we see the truth of those ancient promises verified in the Truth Himself taking our flesh.<\/p>\n

3. If homines<\/em> in the early lines need to be changed to \u201cmen,\u201d though we know that homo, hominis <\/em>means \u201chuman beings,\u201d \u201cpeople,\u201d (as in the new Gloria: \u201cpeace on earth to people<\/strong> (hominibus<\/em>) of good will,\u201d then why does filiis<\/em> not need to be changed from \u201cchildren\u201d (2008) to the more literal \u201csons\u201d?<\/p>\n

4. It may be noted that in the conclusion of the preface, the Vox Clara<\/em> version does not convey the divine agency as explicitly as 2008 does (and Liturgiam Authenticam<\/em> requires). Surely, ut admitti iubeas <\/em>is more adequately translated \u201c(that you would) bid our voices join with theirs\u201d (2008) than Vox Clara\u2019s<\/em> reversion (odd, in light of all the criticism!) to the old ICEL\u2019s \u201cMay our voices join\u201d (old ICEL: blend): iubeo<\/em> has disappeared entirely, and with it, God\u2019s action!<\/p>\n

Our amazement continues at the work that has merited the Holy See\u2019s recognitio<\/em>! Well, from all the ads we\u2019ve seen, at least the new Missal will look<\/em> nice!<\/p>\n
