I am not Irish. Not even a little. But I live in the Archdiocese of New York, and our patron saint is Saint Patrick. Therefore I am going to make bold to offer two prayers for Saint Patrick\u2019s day.<\/p>\n

The first is an old favorite of mine: Saint Patrick\u2019s Breastplate. I like this version because it evokes both the glories of the faith of Christians and trials that beset us. This is good dark age poetry, yet it takes but little to update it to the horrors of modern life, mutatis mutandis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I must admit, I have been especially conscious of the frailty of flesh and of our mortality this week. The disaster in Japan, one that continues to unfold in such horrific detail, is a vivid reminder of the limits of human control over the natural environment and over our own life span and how we shall be called to spend it. The way our days are apportioned on this earth is less predictable and secure than we like to think.<\/p>\n

As it happens, there was also a fatal bus accident only a few miles from me during the past week, in which many people died or were critically injured. Finally, a dear friend of mine has entered another stage of cancer therapy, realizing with style and grace that although no one knows the day or the hour, this round of treatment will be her last. \u201cI bind unto myself today, the strong Name of the Trinity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Second, I am pleased to share with you a lovely, gentle Celtic prayer: \u201cMay the Blessing of Light Be Upon You.\u201d This prayer is also well known evidently, though it was new to me. It too acknowledges mortality, but does it so sweetly that I feel consoled as I read it, and I would like to share that sense of consolation with you. How splendid that it should depict us as \u201clight-bearers\u201d who, by taking in light become light to guide the way for other wayfarers. I am reminded of the gift of our baptism, and the light of Christ that shines brightly if we let it.<\/p>\n

Blessings for\u00a0Saint Patrick\u2019s day, everyone!<\/p>\n

Saint Patrick’s Breastplate<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> bind unto myself today
\nThe strong Name of the Trinity,
\nBy invocation of the same,
\nThe Three in One and One in Three.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> <\/strong>bind this day to me for ever.
\nBy power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
\nHis baptism in the Jordan river;
\nHis death on Cross for my salvation;
\nHis bursting from the spic\u00e8d tomb;
\nHis riding up the heavenly way;
\nHis coming at the day of doom;<\/strong>*
\nI bind unto myself today.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> bind unto myself the power
\nOf the great love of the cherubim;
\nThe sweet ‘well done’ in judgment hour,
\nThe service of the seraphim,
\nConfessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
\nThe Patriarchs’ prayers, the Prophets’ scrolls,
\nAll good deeds done unto the Lord,
\nAnd purity of virgin souls.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> <\/strong>bind unto myself today
\nThe virtues of the starlit heaven,
\nThe glorious sun’s life-giving ray,
\nThe whiteness of the moon at even,
\nThe flashing of the lightning free,
\nThe whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
\nThe stable earth, the deep salt sea,
\nAround the old eternal rocks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> bind unto myself today
\nThe power of God to hold and lead,
\nHis eye to watch, His might to stay,
\nHis ear to hearken to my need.
\nThe wisdom of my God to teach,
\nHis hand to guide, His shield to ward,
\nThe word of God to give me speech,
\nHis heavenly host to be my guard.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A<\/strong>gainst the demon snares of sin,
\nThe vice that gives temptation force,
\nThe natural lusts that war within,
\nThe hostile men that mar my course;
\nOr few or many, far or nigh,
\nIn every place and in all hours,
\nAgainst their fierce hostility,
\nI bind to me these holy powers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A<\/strong>gainst all Satan’s spells and wiles,
\nAgainst false words of heresy,
\nAgainst the knowledge that defiles,
\nAgainst the heart’s idolatry,
\nAgainst the wizard’s evil craft,
\nAgainst the death wound and the burning,
\nThe choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
\nProtect me, Christ, till Thy returning.<\/strong><\/p>\n

C<\/strong>hrist be with me, Christ within me,
\nChrist behind me, Christ before me,
\nChrist beside me, Christ to win me,
\nChrist to comfort and restore me.
\nChrist beneath me, Christ above me,
\nChrist in quiet, Christ in danger,
\nChrist in hearts of all that love me,
\nChrist in mouth of friend and stranger.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong> bind unto myself the Name,
\nThe strong Name of the Trinity;
\nBy invocation of the same.
\nThe Three in One, and One in Three,
\nOf Whom all nature hath creation,
\nEternal Father, Spirit, Word:
\nPraise to the Lord of my salvation,
\nSalvation is of Christ the Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nMay the blessed sunlight shine on you
\nand warm your heart till it glows like a great fire,
\nso that all, whether stranger or friend,
\nmay come and warm themselves at it.
\nAnd may light shine out of your eyes
\nlike a candle in the window of a house,
\nwelcoming the wanderer in out of the storm.<\/p>\n

L:<\/strong> May the blessing of the rain be upon you –
\nthe blessing of the soft sweet rain:
\nmay it fall on your spirit,
\nso that all the little flowers may spring up
\nand shed their sweetness on the air.
\nAnd may the blessing of the great rains be upon you:
\nmay they beat upon your spirit
\nand wash it fair and clean,
\nand leave there a shining pool
\nwhere the blue of heaven shines,
\nand sometimes a star.<\/p>\n

L:<\/strong> May the blessing of the earth be upon you –
\nthe great round earth.
\nMay you ever have a kindly greeting for those you pass
\nas you\u2019re going along the roads.
\nMay the earth be soft under you when you rest on it,
\ntired at the end of the day.
\nAnd may it rest easy over you when,
\nat the last, you lay out under it;
\nmay it rest so lightly over you,
\nthat your soul may be out from under it quickly,
\nand up, and off, and on its way to God.<\/p>\n
