{"id":8405,"date":"2011-03-16T07:05:30","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T13:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=8405"},"modified":"2011-03-16T09:23:04","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T15:23:04","slug":"ministers-or-mysteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2011\/03\/16\/ministers-or-mysteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Ministers or Mysteries?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My fellow Deacon, Greg Kandra, has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/2011\/03\/15\/the-buzz-on-the-new-exultet-here-come-the-bees\/\">post<\/a> on his blog concerning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.icelweb.org\/musicfolder\/openpdf.php?file=ExsultetLong.pdf\">the new translation of the <em>Exultet<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0One of the comments on that post points out something puzzling: the second phrase of the <em>Exultet<\/em>, &#8220;exultent divina mysteria,&#8221; is translated &#8220;let angel ministers of God exult.&#8221; It would seem to me that the obvious (if somewhat puzzling) way to translate this is &#8220;let the divine mysteries exult&#8221; (the current translation has &#8220;Sing choirs of angels&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Is this a case of re-reading &#8220;mysteria&#8221; as &#8220;ministeria&#8221;? It is hard to imagine the translators making such a mistake. &#8220;Divina mysteria&#8221; <em>could<\/em> plausibly be taken as a reference to the unseen angelic world &#8212; an old hand missal I have translates it as &#8220;exultant that unseen world of God&#8217;s creation&#8221; &#8212; and angels certainly minister around God&#8217;s throne, but it is difficult to see how the elimination of &#8220;mysteries&#8221; and the inclusion of &#8220;ministers&#8221; fits within the guidelines of <em>Liturgiam Authenticam<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that this might seem like yet further quibbling about the forthcoming translation, but in fact I&#8217;m simply puzzled here.\u00a0My Latin abilities get pretty shaky once I range beyond the extremely simple scholastic Latin of Thomas Aquinas, so perhaps there is something obvious going on here that I am missing.<\/p>\n<p>Does anybody have any thoughts?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Has the forthcoming translation of the Exultet transformed divine mysteries into angel ministers?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":38,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[24],"tags":[1168,1041,477],"class_list":["post-8405","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-translation-new-missal","tag-exultet","tag-the-deacons-bench","tag-translation-issues"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Ministers or Mysteries?
