But many of the materials are hard and cold, too much concrete (inside and out) that tends to give the structure\u00a0a\u00a0harshness\u00a0that may not be the first impression one should\u00a0have of a cathedral. The lack of\u00a0color or warm texture on the inside only adds to this sense of sterility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-outdoors.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8086 aligncenter\" title=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - entrance\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-outdoors.JPG\" alt=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - entrance\" width=\"194\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The structure itself is a bold and soaring marker in the city, overlooking Lake Merritt &#8211; a site well suited\u00a0for the\u00a0cathedral. The generous outdoor space begs for some landscaping to soften the concrete bunker walls and planters, and hopefully some future artwork that would cause folks to linger and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-stairs.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8087\" title=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - stairs\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-stairs.JPG\" alt=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - stairs\" width=\"272\" height=\"408\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The building is impressed with its own architectonics, but I&#8217;m\u00a0not too impressed with its liturgical friendliness &#8211; there could have\u00a0 been a more courageous and imaginative arrangement\u00a0for the liturgical function &#8211; after all this is primarily what a Catholic church serves.\u00a0Given the rather daring design of the architect &#8212; a firm known more for secular commissions than liturgical ones &#8212; I expected something more &#8216;cutting edge&#8217;\u00a0in\u00a021st century liturgical architecture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-back.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8084 aligncenter\" title=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - back\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/CCtL-back.JPG\" alt=\"Cathedral of Christ the Light - back\" width=\"408\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A positive note re. the interior: with all the lack of color and texture, this may be a very good example of how the gathered assembly is truly the most important expression of, and finishing touch upon the architectural canvas.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Horrigan<\/p>\n<p><em>Fr.
