{"id":798,"date":"2010-02-07T10:37:07","date_gmt":"2010-02-07T15:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=798"},"modified":"2010-12-17T17:25:32","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T23:25:32","slug":"longing-for-liturgy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/07\/longing-for-liturgy\/","title":{"rendered":"Longing for Liturgy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is the year 1535 A.D.\u00a0 In the Tower of London, one of the prisoners prays with\u00a0an inexpensive Book of Hours which he was able to take with him when arrested.\u00a0 At the back of this Book of Hours is a Latin Psalter, in which the prisoner has highlighted and annotated passages that hold particular meaning for him.\u00a0 Psalm 22 [21], for example, has a line next to the verses in which the psalmist reminds God of the care and midwifery God extended since before birth. At the beginning of Psalm 84 [83], words are scribbled alongside the psalm verses, expressing a deep longing to be able to attend worship again.\u00a0 The prisoner at prayer is Sir Thomas More, Catholic layman, former Lord Chancellor of England, husband and father, and soon-to-be martyr for his Roman Catholic faith.<\/p>\n<p>This past summer, I held Thomas More\u2019s Book of Hours (which is now at Yale\u2019s Beinecke library<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-admin\/#_edn1\">[i]<\/a>) in my hands.\u00a0 Besides my sheer amazement at being able to peruse this book, I also began to wonder &#8212; in the face of Thomas More\u2019s deep desire to join others in worship again \u2013 about our own longings when it comes to liturgy.\u00a0 I will be the first to admit that \u201c<strong><em>longing<\/em><\/strong> for liturgy\u201d is not what motivates me on any given Sunday morning.\u00a0 If anything, I long for a good cup of coffee, and for the mercifully slow beginning to a day.\u00a0 I delight in a long walk to the lake and in the newspaper and novel awaiting me.\u00a0 What would it mean to <strong><em>long <\/em><\/strong>for liturgy, to delight in joining others for worship?\u00a0 Sometimes I wonder whether liturgical planning, formation, and preparation do not need to begin right there \u2013 in creating <strong><em>desire.<\/em><\/strong> There is a saying in my native German tongue: <em>Hunger ist der beste Koch<\/em> \u2013 hunger is the best cook.\u00a0 In other words:\u00a0 what you eat tastes best if you are truly, deeply hungry.\u00a0 What has to happen for us to come to liturgy truly hungry, truly longing?\u00a0 For Thomas More, being a prisoner in the Tower of London clearly made him long in this way.\u00a0 But for us, what will help us shape our Sundays so that we come to worship with longing hearts?<\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-admin\/#_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> Beinecke Library, Yale University, RSTC 15963, Ms Vault, More, Psalter, folio xvj.\u00a0 In the 1969 facsimile edition, the marginalia are much more readable than they are in the original, see <em>Thomas More\u2019s Prayer Book: A Facsimile Reproduction of The Annotated Pages<\/em>, ed.
