class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the decades, I have learned<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that there are a couple of topics about which <br>\u00a0\u00a0 celibate clergy,<br>like me, should avoid since we have no expertise:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like paying taxes or giving financial guidance<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 since I am supported by a tax-exempt institution<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or providing advice on the work-life balance in the corporate world<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 since I have never been employed there<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or offering tips on a stress-free marriage<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 since observation from afar suggests there is no such thing,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or offering opinions about child-rearing<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 about which I am completely ignorant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family relationships are fraught with tension, even peril.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some of that is captured in a musical about the prodigal son<br>written by favorite liturgical composer and friend Rory Cooney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lyric from his song \u201cFamily\u201d comes to mind,<br>as Cooney writes:<br><br><em>Living with family never is easy,<\/em><br><em>Child in a wink goes from baby to beast.<\/em><br><em>That\u2019s why some people decide to stay single,<\/em><br><em>That\u2019s why some people decide to be priests \u2026<\/em><br><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>through Christ our Lord.\u00a0 Amen!<br><br>Given this perspective, today\u2019s Gospel<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 could be considered something of<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an evangelical booby trap for clerics<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">especially some of us ecclesiastical dinosaurs<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 who left home to join the seminary at age 13 \u2013<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 something which my own mother never let me forget!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On the surface this section from Matthew suggests<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that we have to love Jesus more than our parents,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an apparent contradiction of the 4th Mosaic commandment:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201chonor your father and mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So the challenge, as with so many scriptural passages:<br>to avoid isolating a few verses from the rest of the scriptures<br>or taking them too literally,<br>but instead interpreting them so that they are connected<br>to Jesus\u2019 central commandments<br>of love of God, neighbor &amp; self<br>and his relentless invitation for us to be servants like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way to do that may be to step away from the scriptures<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and even the human family and, instead, explore more widely<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 how nature has a funny way of ignoring the rulebook<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 when it comes to relationships<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and even the very definition of parenting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The worlds of primatology, zoology and nature studies<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are filled with documentable reports<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of exceedingly odd couple relationships,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 interspecies nurturing,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and even hunter-prey parenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notable is <a href=\"https:\/\/everythinganimals.quora.com\/Kamunyak-a-lioness-famous-for-adopting-oryx-calvesabout-18-years-ago-and-fighting-off-predators-and-lion-prides-which-at#:~:text=Photo%20source%20Samburu.-,Kamunyak%2Ca%20lioness%20famous%20for%20adopting%20oryx%20calvesabout%2018%20years,National%20Reserve%20here%20in%20Kenya\">the story of the lioness Kamunyak<\/a><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 who found a baby antelope &#8211; usually prey for lions.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But instead of having it for lunch<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she mothered it and fiercely protected it for over a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then there was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eye_of_the_Leopard#:~:text=Eye%20of%20the%20Leopard%20is,a%20cub%20to%20an%20adult.\">once in a lifetime filming<\/a><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of a young leopard named Legadema<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 who killed a mother baboon for food<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but then discovered a newborn clinging to the mother<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and instead of turning it into dessert,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 she spent the night grooming the infant<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 carrying it high into the trees to keep it from hyenas<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and cradled it against her body for warmth.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe oddest of all was the coupling of<br>a baby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Owen-Mzee-Story-Remarkable-Friendship\/dp\/0439829739\">Hippo and a giant land Tortoise<\/a>:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a stranded baby hippo was rescued and brought to Kenya.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Traumatized and alone, the 1-year-old hippo sought comfort<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the same animal reserve<br>from 130-year-old giant tortoise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the tortoise\u2019s initial grumpiness<br>\u2013 after all, he was well into his 2<sup>nd<\/sup> century \u2013<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he eventually not only accepted the hippo<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but nurtured him as his sidekick<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 offering him protection and comfort as the world\u2019s<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 greatest great-great-great-great grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ll end this excursus with the 2022 story of<br>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/lifestyle\/fred-labrador-dog-adopts-ducklings#:~:text=The%20pooch%20previously%20adopted%20nine,them%20climb%20all%20over%20him.\">English Golden lab Fred<\/a> who he took on a massive brood<br>of 15 orphaned ducklings whose mother had vanished.<br>The ducklings were frequently photographed<br>hitching a ride on Fred\u2019s back<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 following him into the water for a swim<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and swarming him whenever he decided to rest<br>climbing over his back,<br>nuzzling into his fur,<br>even sleeping on his head<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 [there is a picture of them on my website].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charming, you might say, but we are not<br>tortoises or labradors,<br>lionesses or leopards;<br>rather we are human beings<br>-who fiercely defend our family of origins<br>our Irish or pseudo-Irish roots<br>and the ancient grudges we\u2019ve been encouraged to call &#8220;tradition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a word, that is both psychological and theological hogwash.<br><br>On the contrary, however, there is an abundance of scientific evidence<br>not only about human\u2019s capacity for <a href=\"https:\/\/sciety.org\/articles\/activity\/10.31234\/osf.io\/z6n7e_v1\">non-biological parenting<\/a><br>or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/17\/19\/7346\">importance of families of choice<\/a> over families of origin<br>but also their necessity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many families do you know, as do I,<br>where cousins, or friends, or foster kids<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 were fixtures around dinner tables<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and the reason for buying bunk beds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many families do you know, as I do,<br>where multiple \u201caunties\u201d were not related by blood,<br>the so called \u201cguest room\u201d had a permanent guest,<br>and where \u201cbrother\u201d is a title not inherited through birth<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but earned in loyalty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a very human level we have an experiential edge<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 an instinctive understanding<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 even a deep empathy for embracing the other as family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, to suggest that in this gospel<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus is directing us to abandon our families, friends, beloveds<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in order to be true disciples<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is an exercise in theological naivet\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rather, as always, Jesus is missioning us to do something:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To redefine family by embracing the other<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 other tribe or race<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 other gender identity or political affiliation<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as belonging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">something Jesus does with astounding regularity.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thus, in deeds without words<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus says to the Samaritan woman<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cyou are my sister\u201d<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as he says to the tax collector Zaccheus<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cyou are my brother\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As as he says to the widow at Naim in raising her child<br>\u201cYou too are my mother, too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Son Yang-won lived in Yeosu, South Korea,<br>where he primarily ministered to a colony of people<br>suffering from Hansen\u2019s disease (leprosy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 1948, during the volatile geopolitical climate<br>leading up to the Korean War, a Communist student uprising broke out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the chaos, a mob of radicalized leftist youths<br>targeted Christian families.<br>They captured Pastor Son&#8217;s two eldest biological sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A young student named Chai-sun led the betrayal<br>and execution of the two brothers<br>because of their political and religious beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both sons died refusing to recant their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When government forces suppressed the rebellion a week later<br>Chai-sun was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death<br>by firing squad for the murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon hearing the news, though devastated by the loss of his sons,<br>Pastor Son shocked the community and the government:<br>by fiercely pleading fiercely with the military authorities<br>to spare the life of his sons&#8217; killer,<br>arguing that executing the young man<br>would not bring his sons back,<br>nor would it heal the hatred gripping the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s life was spared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then mercy took a giant leap toward resurrection<br>For Pastor Son not only intervened to save the boys life<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But then formally requested to adopt him into his own family<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To raise him place of the sons that he had murdered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not too often you hear about military leaders<br>Reversing an execution order in the face of radical grace,<br>But moved by this unimaginable act of mercy,<br>the military released him into the pastor&#8217;s custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chai-sun legally became a member of the Son family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this aftermath of this merciful abundance,<br>The boy repented,<br>converted to Christianity,<br>and eventually even went on to seminary,<br>becoming minister himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the funeral for his biological sons,<br>Pastor Son famously offered a prayer<br>listing nine distinct reasons for thanksgiving,<br>including thanking God for giving him a heart<br>that could love his enemy and compel him to adopt the murderer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This unimaginable incarnation of today\u2019s gospel passage<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Earned Pastor Son the nickname: the atomic bomb of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tragically, Pastor Son&#8217;s own life was cut short just two years later.<br>In September 1950, during the Korean War,<br>he refused to abandon his patients at the leper colony<br>when North Korean troops advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was captured and executed by North Korean forces,<br>dying a martyr.<br>At his funeral, his adopted son, Chai-sun,<br>Led the funeral procession as the chief mourner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In another part of Matthew\u2019s gospel, Jesus asks<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cwho is my mother and who are my brothers\u201d<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pastor Son extended that question further asking<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cwho is my son, who is my family\u201d<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And answered it in his living and his dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of us will never face a grief that staggering,<br>or offer a mercy that unimaginable<br>Yet, the very same gospel<br>That broke open the heart of a grieving father<br>Daily knocks at the door of our lives as well<br>disturbing the comfortable boundaries<br>we draw around our own small worlds<br>and asks us to look into the unfamiliar face<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 listen to the unwelcome voice<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 extend a hand across<br> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the racial<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cultural<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 social divides<br>and in so doing dare to see our freshly revealed kin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As that is not an easy journey, we rely upon the grace of the gospel,<br>The sustenance of God\u2019s spirit,<br>And the company of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We leave this place and step back into a fractured world<br>as with the poet, we pray for expanded hearts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May we be blessed
