Brother Stanislaus Campbell, FSC, (Joseph Topping Campbell), a devoted Christian Brother for over 70 years, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, in Napa, California, at the age of 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born Joseph Topping Campbell on January 31, 1935, in Oakland, California, \u201cJoe\u201d grew up in Berkeley as the eldest of three sons in the close-knit Catholic family of Leo and Mary Campbell. After attending the School of the Madeleine and Saint Mary\u2019s College High School, he entered the Novitiate of the Christian Brothers in 1953, receiving the religious habit and the name \u201cStanislaus\u201d in 1954.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known affectionately as \u201cBrother Stan,\u201d he dedicated his life to the Lasallian mission of providing education to the young. His teaching ministry began at La Salle High School in Pasadena in 1958, followed by positions at Mont La Salle and Justin High School in Napa. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in forming new generations of Brothers as Director of the Novitiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A distinguished scholar, Brother Stanislaus earned his B.A. from Saint Mary\u2019s College in 1958, followed by an M.A. in Theology from Saint Mary\u2019s College in 1965, an M.A. in Liturgical Research from the University of Notre Dame in 1974, and a Ph.D. in Liturgy from Notre Dame in 1987. His doctoral work culminated in the publication of \u201cFrom Breviary to Liturgy of the Hours,\u201d a scholarly text that continues to receive recognition from liturgical scholars worldwide and is scheduled for republication next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brother Stan served as Visitor (Provincial) of the District of San Francisco from 2003 to 2011, leading with grace and pastoral sensitivity. After a brief sabbatical, he served as Director of the Provincialate Community at Mont La Salle until his retirement in 2021, where he remained until his passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Brother Stan would quietly rewrite his teaching notes each year from scratch, ensuring he presented material freshly and faithfully. In his final twelve years at Mont La Salle, he established a beloved weekly Sunday Mass that drew visitors from across Napa Valley. After services, he hosted fellowship with coffee, chocolate, and pastries, creating what became for many a spiritual home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his many responsibilities, \u201cUncle Joe\u201d remained deeply devoted to his family, hosting annual gatherings in Napa and maintaining connections with relatives near and far. He once traveled to India for a joyful reunion with his niece, who journeyed 60 hours by train to meet him. Family members fondly recall his infectious laughter during holiday games \u2014 on one occasion laughing so hard that the room briefly panicked, only to find him crying from sheer joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Brother described him as \u201ca dedicated and effective student, an excellent teacher, an exceptionally good community man, and an ideal religious in the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brother Stanislaus was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Joseph Campbell and Mary Topping, his brothers John Campbell and Robert Campbell, cousins Sister Mary Campbell SNJM, Phillip Topping, and Admiral Robert Topping. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow Christian Brothers, colleagues, and former students whose lives he shaped through his ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funeral services were held at Mont La Salle Chapel, 4401 Redwood Rd., Napa, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 11:00 am. Harmon, Ph.D., is Project Director for the Obsculta Preaching Initiative at Saint John\u2019s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. \u202fA Roman Catholic pastoral liturgist and American Catholic historian, Harmon is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame\u2019s liturgical studies program.\u202f She has contributed over a dozen articles and chapters to the fields of both liturgical studies and American Catholicism.\u202f She is the author of\u202f There Were Also Many Women There: Lay Women in the Liturgical Movement in the United States, 1926-1959\u202f(Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2013) and\u202fMary and the Liturgical Year: A Pastoral Resource\u202f (Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 2023).
