The Global Catholic Network recalls the reason why we commemorate this miraculous Marian apparition on this date: “In 1531, the Blessed Mother appeared four times to St. Juan Diego, asking for a church to be built in her honor. The last time she appeared to him, on December 12, 1531, she arranged roses in his tilma, which he then took to the bishop. When he opened his cloak, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously present on the tilma.”

The Catholic Church celebrates this important moment in the liturgical year by incorporating Mexican and Latin American cultural expressions. The deep Marian devotion inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe—affectionately known in Spanish as La Morenita (Dark Virgin) and La Guadalupana—finds its roots, in addition to the inherent miracle of her apparition on the tilma of St. Juan Diego, to the fact that Mexican Catholic believers turned to her intercession for protection during the War of Independence. Thus, La Guadalupana became the patroness of the Mexican army, and her protection spread rapidly and with conviction throughout all Spanish-speaking countries. For this reason, Catholics recognize her as the Patroness of the Americas.

Every midnight on December 11, devotees of La Morenita begin celebrating her day by singing Las Mañanitas, the most popular birthday song, sung by mariachi bands. Prior to this, Catholics have observed the Novena, which consists of praying publicly or privately for nine days as spiritual preparation for commemorating her feast day on December 12.

In the days leading up to this important date and on December 12th, approximately 10 to 12 million pilgrims arrive to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and Marian devotees around the world replicate this pilgrimage in their local parishes and basilicas. During the liturgies, people commemorate the story of her apparition on the tilma; they highlight Juan Diego’s faith; and they recall the symbolism of her miraculous appearance. Her hands, joined in a humble gesture of prayer, have slightly different tones, because her message was also aimed at reconciliation and unity among people of different races. Her willingness to appear four times before the indigenous boy Juan Diego sends the message that, for God, we are all equal, and that all believers can find faith, hope, and protection in the Holy Blessed Virgin Mary.

Our Lady of Guadalupe also appeared (between December 9-12, 1531) before Juan Bernardino, Juan Diego’s uncle, who was ill, and to whom La Morenita promised to heal him if he first went to see the bishop. On the fourth occasion when she appeared to the young Juan Diego (December 12th, 1531), Our Lady of Guadalupe asked him to tell the bishop that it was her wish that a church be built for her on Tepeyac Hill.

Los Guadalupanos—as devotees of Our Lady of Guadalupe are known—bring flowers to their churches and parishes in her honor. The flowers are a symbol of the flowers that miraculously bloomed in the middle of December, and that Juan Diego brought to the bishop in the tilma on which the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared. Los Guadalupanos also bring lit candles, colorful decorations for each altar, and, of course, images of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After the Masses in her honor, her devotees gather as a community, as a one family in Christ, and celebrate with typical Mexican food, such as tamales, sweet bread, pozole, champurrado, and desserts, preserving the message of Catholic unity and hospitality that every Guadalupano extends to their neighbor.

Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has transcended the symbolism of the Catholic faith and is also part of Mexican culture and Hispanic American traditions.

Major Pilgrimages in the United States on December 12, 2025

During the Jubilee Year of Hope, the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will have an even more special Marian significance in various states across the United States.
