{"id":68498,"date":"2025-11-06T08:15:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=68498"},"modified":"2025-11-06T08:15:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T14:15:12","slug":"mary-whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/06\/mary-whats-in-a-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary: What\u2019s In a Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By: Staff, November 6, 2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vatican Restricts Use of &#8220;Co-Redemptrix&#8221; Title for Mary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 4, 2025, the Vatican\u2019s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) published <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_ddf_doc_20251104_mater-populi-fidelis_en.html\">Mater Populi Fidelis<\/a><\/em>, a doctrinal note approved by Pope Leo XIV on October 7. The document discourages the use of &#8220;Co-redemptrix&#8221; for the Virgin Mary due to risks of theological confusion and ecumenical harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title has appeared since the 15th century and, more recently, been employed by popes like Pius X, Pius XI, and John Paul II (who referenced it seven times in non-authoritative contexts), implying Mary\u2019s cooperation in redemption. However, Vatican II omitted it from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19641121_lumen-gentium_en.html\">Lumen Gentium<\/a><\/em> and, in 1996, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger <a href=\"https:\/\/angelusnews.com\/faith\/once-again-pope-francis-says-mary-is-not-the-co-redemptrix\/\">opposed its dogmatic definition<\/a>, citing lack of scriptural grounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leo&#8217;s note states that &#8220;Co-redemptrix&#8221; could obscure Christ\u2019s sole mediatorship (1 Timothy 2:5, \u201cone mediator between God and humans\u201d) and suggests equality rather than subordinate participation. Pope Francis has also <a href=\"https:\/\/angelusnews.com\/faith\/once-again-pope-francis-says-mary-is-not-the-co-redemptrix\/\">rejected the term<\/a>, saying Mary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/homilies\/2019\/documents\/papa-francesco_20191212_omelia-guadalupe.html\">never presented herself as co-Savior<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document states, &#8220;Given the need to explain Mary&#8217;s subordinate role to Christ in the work of Redemption,\u00a0it is always inappropriate\u00a0to use the title &#8216;Coredemptrix&#8217; to define Mary&#8217;s cooperation.&#8221; (\u00a722) Instead, the DDF endorses titles like \u201cMother of the Faithful\u201d and \u201cSpiritual Mother,\u201d which emphasize intercession without compromising Christ\u2019s unique role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what people around the internet are saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal Fern\u00e1ndez, within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/vatican-city\/news\/2025-11\/doctrinal-note-mother-of-the-faithful-not-co-redemptrix.html\">document<\/a> in question, says: \u201cWhen an expression requires many, repeated explanations to prevent it from straying from a correct meaning, it does not serve the faith of the People of God and becomes unhelpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed Fesser, associate professor of philosophy at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California, <a href=\"https:\/\/edwardfeser.blogspot.com\/2025\/11\/cardinal-fernandez-on-doctrinal-clarity.html?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\">responded<\/a> to the above statement this way: \u201cWell said. But consider all the ink spilled in recent years by those attempting to explain: Pope Francis&#8217;s claim that &#8220;the pluralism and the diversity of religions&#8230; are willed by God&#8221;, and how human beings can &#8220;possess an infinite dignity,&#8221; given that, on the most natural reading of that expression, only God can have such dignity.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the X account belonging to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/metathomist\/status\/1985761498464207284\">@metathomist<\/a>: \u201cThis document was, at least in part, a response to\u2026 proposals\u2026 to compel the Holy See to dogmatize such a title\u2026. As such the document itself does not, in any way, lessen Mary\u2019s co-redemptive role in strict subordination to Christ\u2026. The document affirms Christ\u2019s satisfaction as unique, perfect, and sufficient and Mary\u2019s cooperation as maternal and subordinate. These both flow from the same truth\u2026.
