Praedicandi: Fourth Sunday of Advent, Ed Foley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One unique practice at Old St. Pat\u2019s<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that I have come to appreciate over the years<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 occurs each year on Mother\u2019s Day<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 when the community takes a break from male voices<br>       suspends the preaching by celibate men<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in order to be nourished by a reflective word<br>       from flesh and blood mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It reminds me of the venerable Spanish proverb:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Una onza<\/em> <em>de<\/em> <em>madre vale una libra de cl\u00e9rigos\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><br>       <em>which roughly translates as<\/em><br><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A poignant enactment of that proverb occurred in 1903 <br>when Pius X&#8217;s was elected pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was one of the few in modern history<br>whose mother was alive to witness that event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the day of his coronation<br>the new pope&#8217;s mother was in the front row.\u00a0<br>Towards the end of the long ceremony,<br>Pius X walked to his mother, held out his hand,<br>and whispered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would like you to be the first to kiss the ring of the fisherman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She kissed it, and then she held out her hand with its worn wedding ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow Joseph,\u201d she said, \u201cyou kiss this one.<br>For if it wasn&#8217;t for my ring, you wouldn\u2019t have yours!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Una onza<\/em> <em>de<\/em> <em>madre vale una libra de cl\u00e9rigos.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While do not want to turn the Evangelist <br>into some kind of anachronistic feminist,<br>Luke does seem to echo similar wisdom<br>in these verses from the 1<sup>st<\/sup> chapter of his Gospel<br>Which suggest that an ounce of mother is worth <br>a pound of the apocalyptic prophets that both of them bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This section of Luke\u2019s gospel is quite remarkable<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in that for over 30 consecutive verses<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no male speaks a word<br>              or even has a leading role in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this is the real Mother\u2019s Day gospel<br>as the Church transplants Mother\u2019s Day<br>from May to December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the process, what we sometimes call \u201cHoly Mother Church\u201d<br>presents these two very tough mothers<br>as the final images of an enduring advent spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes in the commercialization of Mother\u2019s Day,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the romanticization of parenting<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 overlooks the perilous work of mothering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From my own experience of being mothered<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and from observing sisters, other relatives and close friends,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I have caught a glimpse of the challenges, even pain<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of the maternal vocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humorist Erma Bombeck captured this parenting paradox<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in her musings about the day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/193095-when-god-created-mothers-when-the-good-lord-was-creating\">God created Mothers<\/a>, she wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When the Lord God was creating mothers he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, \u201cyou&#8217;re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>God said, \u201cHave you read the specs on this order?\u00a0 She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 180 moveable parts &#8230; run on black coffee and leftovers &#8230; have a lap that disappears when she stands up &#8230; a kiss that can cure anything from a broken toy to a disappointed love affair and six pairs of hands.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The angel shook her head and asked, \u201csix pairs of hands?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not the hands that are causing me problems,\u201d said the Lord.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s the three pairs of eyes mothers have to have \u2026. One pair that sees through closed doors when she yells \u2018what are you kids doing there?\u2019 when she already knows.\u00a0 Another in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn\u2019t but what she has to.\u00a0 And the ones in the front that can look at a child when she goofs up that say, \u2018I understand and love you\u2019 without so much as uttering a word.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Touching his sleeve gently the angel said, \u201cGo to bed; tomorrow is another day.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t,\u201d said the Lord.\u00a0 \u201cI&#8217;m so close now.\u00a0 Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick, can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger, and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The angel slowly circled the mother. \u201cIt\u2019s too soft,\u201d she sighed.\u00a0 \u201cBut tough,\u201d countered the Lord.\u00a0 \u201cYou cannot imagine what this mother can do.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a leak,\u201d she declared.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s not a leak,\u201d said the Lord, \u201cit\u2019s a tear.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s it for?\u201d asked the angel.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s for sadness, joy, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re a genius\u201d said the angel.\u00a0 But the Lord looked somber replying, \u201cI didn\u2019t put it there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a humorist, Bombeck reveals herself as a perceptive theologian:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 understanding, maybe from her own experience,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that mothering \u2013 parenting \u2013 is the paradoxical combination<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of joy and sorrow, laughter and pain, smiles and tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mary and Elizabeth knew both in spades throughout their lives:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Elizabeth living through decades of childless disgrace<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mary accepting a child she did not ask for<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 facing a future colored with reproach and scorn<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for conceiving out of wedlock\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and both prevailed with exceptional strength and sanctity:<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a strength that Luke captures well<br>              in this mother-centered passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Blogger Nancy Rockwell highlights this Lukan sensitivity<br> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in her article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/biteintheapple\/no-more-lying-about-mary\/\">No more lying about Mary<\/a>,\u201d when she writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It\u2019s Advent, and the same old lies about Mary are slipping over pulpits and out of parish letters, Christmas cards, public prayers, and TV holiday movies.\u00a0 The subjugation of Mary, the maligning of her as meek, mild, and mindless, has been harmful to millions of women over many centuries.\u00a0 Hiding within the wonder of Christmas are a thousand years of doctrinal female subjugation, doctrines that, like tinsel, are dripped all over the season of Christmas.  In the midst of the celebration of a Wonderful Life, these malicious ideas keep women from feeling empowered, invited to be strong, and urged by God to imagine new ways to live &#8230;. In Luke\u2019s account there is nothing submissive nor immature about Mary.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Traveling alone, like every prophet before her, she sets out on her first journey, to &#8230; Elizabeth\u2019s house, to declare her agenda.&nbsp; There will be more journeys: to Bethlehem; to Egypt and back; to Jerusalem when Jesus is twelve; and to Jerusalem when [her boy] is crucified.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>She gives birth in a barn, lies down with animals, and welcomes weathered shepherds in the middle of the night.  She is determined, not domestic; free, not foolish; holy, not helpless; strong, not submissive. She beckons women everywhere to speak out for God\u2019s justice, which is waiting to be born into this world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, for all of her passion, strength and even holiness,<br>she like Elizabeth \u2026 and every other parent in the world<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cannot protect her child from harm<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cannot shield him from attacks and rejection<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from repudiation and scorn<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 nor ultimately from a wholly unjust criminal execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What she and a multitude of other mothers do, however,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is continue to believe him<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 remain devoted to him through triumphs and trials<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and ultimately accompany him into death<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fearless at the foot of the cross<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with a few other women and a boy<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as all the guys in his inner circle abandoned him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poignancy of caring for children is magnified in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starnewsonline.com\/story\/opinion\/letters\/2019\/08\/30\/letters-reader-calls-gun-related-red-flag-laws-unconstitutional\/4346021007\/\">short posting<\/a><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 on a mother\u2019s Facebook page.\u00a0 She writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI was buying Maisy school shoes, and she told me she didn\u2019t want a pair of light up shoes.\u00a0 I figured it was because she\u2019s going into 5th grade and they felt childish to her. Instead she said \u201cWhat if there\u2019s a lockdown drill or a school shooter?\u00a0 Light up shoes would make me stand out.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This heartbreaking story underscores the Advent challenge<br>for women and men everywhere<br>to speak out for God\u2019s justice<br>waiting to be born into this world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As this Advent season comes to a close<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and we prepare to remember Jesus\u2019 birth in history<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 we yet wait for the birth of peace, of safety, of respect,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of care for most vulnerable, especially the children<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 born and unborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This must be our enduring gift to the generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And in the interim, we stand brave and strong<br>              with Mary and Elizabeth<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 never abandoning the children \u2026 all of the children<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no matter what roadblocks obstructs their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poet Kahil Gibran prophetically and painfully writes:<br><br><em>Your children are not your children.<br>They are the sons and daughters of Life&#8217;s longing for itself.<br>They come through you but not from you,<br>And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You may give them your love but not your thoughts,<br>For they have their own thoughts.<br>You may house their bodies but not their souls,<br>For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,<br>which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You are the bows from which your children<br>as living arrows are sent forth.<br>The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,<br>and He bends you with His might<br>that His arrows may go swift and far.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let your bending in the archer\u2019s hand be for gladness;<br>For even as He loves the arrow that flies,<br>so He loves also the bow that is stable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary understood that, embodying holy bending<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sacred faithfulness, maternal loyalty<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sending her son upon the path of the infinite<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 even, as the prophet foretold, her heart would be pierced<br>       as she stood by her boy, even in his execution<br>       though unable to shield him from harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so in this season, when so many children\u2019s hopes are high<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But sadly so many children have no hope<br>may her strength sustain us<br>her constancy inspire us<br>her friendship support us<br>and even her pain console us<br>in the daunting advent work that lies before us,<br>through Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ED FOLEY &#8212; As this Advent season comes to a close and we prepare to remember Jesus\u2019 birth in history, we yet wait for the birth of peace, of safety, of respect, of care for most vulnerable, especially the children born and unborn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":66008,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[3294],"tags":[464,3253],"class_list":["post-65996","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ars-praedicandi","tag-advent","tag-ed-foley"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
