{"id":63124,"date":"2024-01-08T09:22:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T15:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=63124"},"modified":"2024-01-23T13:09:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T19:09:34","slug":"ecumenism-is-banned-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/08\/ecumenism-is-banned-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecumenism is banned&#8230;again&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Is ecumenism dead?\u00a0 Is there any left?\u00a0 Is there any hope for Catholics?\u00a0 For anyone?<br><br>At the recent North American Academy of Liturgy meeting, I found myself describing the \u201cisolation\u201d of Catholics, and Catholic ignorance of other traditions and rites.\u00a0 My Protestant brothers and sisters looked at me with some sympathy, but not all their experiences are the same. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since my profound ecumenical experiences at my undergraduate institution (Valparaiso University), I have not again experienced a truly ecumenical faith community.\u00a0 After I graduated and began working with more &#8220;Catholic&#8221; circles, my insistence that ecumenism was important was met by some with \u201cwhat\u2019s the point?\u201d as a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My discouragement and wonder continue today with the news that another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/opinion\/guest-voices\/archbishops-mass-ban-ecumenical-community-reflects-outdated-hierarchical-model?utm_source=NCR+List&amp;utm_campaign=76dcf3a4dd-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_01_08_01_04&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6981ecb02e-76dcf3a4dd-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D\">ecumenical venture has been \u201cbanned\u201d<\/a> in the archdiocese of Portland, Oregon. &nbsp;The community known as Spirit of Grace, in Beaverton, OR, has been an ecumenical venture between Roman Catholics and ELCA Lutherans since its founding in 1986.&nbsp; They may no longer celebrate Mass together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, acknowledging that we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/special_features\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_20030417_ecclesia_eucharistia_en.html\">cannot \u201cmake\u201d communion<\/a> happen when communities are not in communion with one another, why cannot we still pray together?&nbsp; Even <em>if <\/em>the act of sacramental communion runs into walls\u2014with a Catholic asking for a blessing from a Lutheran pastor, or a Lutheran taking the precious blood to his lips, but <em>not<\/em> drinking it\u2014why cannot we commune together at the table of the Word, join together in prayer and petition, raise our voices in song, and celebrate Christian fellowship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe ecumenism is dead.\u00a0 But Jesus isn\u2019t.\u00a0 And I\u2019m pretty sure he\u2019s hoping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25051995_ut-unum-sint.html\">that all might be one<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To read more about this community and the challenges of hoping for Christian unity, see <a href=\"https:\/\/spiritofgracepdx.org\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KATHARINE E.
