The Mexican bishops\u2019 conference have finished work on series of Indigenous liturgical adaptations for the celebration of the Eucharist for the \u201coriginal peoples\u201d of Mexico. During their 114th plenary assembly last April , the Mexican considered these adaptations and held a vote on them, where 103 of the 105 bishops voted to approve the adaptations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACI Prensa, the Spanish-language news partner of Catholic News Association (a service of EWTN News) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciprensa.com\/noticias\/que-son-las-adaptaciones-liturgicas-indigenas-que-propone-la-iglesia-en-mexico-al-vaticano-15764\">Interviewed Cardinal Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel<\/a>. Arizmendi is the emeritus bishop of San Crist\u00f3bal de Las Casas and coordinated the effort to prepare the proposed adaptations. CNA has published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/254911\/mexican-bishops-submit-indigenous-liturgical-adaptations-to-the-vatican-for-approval\">English version of the story<\/a>. Arizmendi has explained that \u201cadvancing the progress of inculturation of the Church in the native peoples and of taking responsibility for the celebration of Holy Mass with some elements of these cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0While earlier reports on the endeavor compared it to the Zaire Missal, the Cardinal explained that it\u2019s not a question of creating a new Indigenous rite but of incorporating into the liturgy various ways of relating to God of these peoples and which express the same thing as the Roman rite, but in its cultural form.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The adaptations were delivered to the Dicastery for Divine Worship in Rome where they are awaiting final approval. Arizmendi gave some details of the proposed adaptations that \u201ccan be incorporated into the Holy Mass without harming the eucharistic liturgy.\u201d Three examples were mentioned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first of these is allowing a layman or laywoman to incense \u201cthe altar, the crucifix, the images, the offerings,\u201d after the priest has blessed the incense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second is the appointment of a \u201csenior layperson\u201d would also be incorporated into the liturgical life of the community. Neil Xavier O'Donoghue"},"description":"Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue is originally from Cork, Ireland. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
