{"id":61610,"date":"2023-03-16T17:22:12","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T22:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=61610"},"modified":"2023-04-02T14:15:51","modified_gmt":"2023-04-02T19:15:51","slug":"how-big-is-too-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/16\/how-big-is-too-big\/","title":{"rendered":"How Big is Too Big?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 1999 Pope St. John Paul II warned the Bishops of Ontario on their Their <em>Ad Limina<\/em> Visit, \u201c<em>the anonymity of the city cannot be allowed to enter our Eucharistic communities.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I remembered this point recently when reading two news articles.\u00a0 The first is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/st-charles-borromeo-church-creates-an-environment-which-makes-you-think-of-the-eucharist\">about the dedication of the new St. Charles Borromeo Church, Visalia, California<\/a> in the Diocese of Fresno.\u00a0 With seating for 3,200 people, this new church is reported to be \u201cthe largest parish church in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Given the problems of priest shortage and the need for parishes to serve more people, I can understand the pastoral needs that led to the construction of such a large church.\u00a0 But hearing the new church described as \u201ca football field under a roof,\u201d leads me to wonder if it is too big.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I read about this new big church, I also reflected on another recent article that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/253787\/decline-in-vocations-to-the-priesthood-is-worse-in-dioceses-with-larger-flocks-report-says\">the decline in vocations to the priesthood is worse where priests serve larger flocks<\/a>.\u00a0 While I think that cathedral liturgy has its place and that occasional worship on a large level can be beneficial experience, I also think that Christian liturgy benefits from the intimacy of the smaller community where, to borrow a phrase, \u201ceveryone knows your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I raise this point as a topic of reflection. Many small parishes are nonetheless islands of anonymity.
