Praedicandi:<\/i> 3rd Sunday of Lent, Ed Foley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is probably not kosher for a preacher to admit<br \/>\nthat he doesn\u2019t read a lot of theology anymore.<br \/>\nEspecially if he is a retired theology professor.<\/p>\n<p>While I read some, at lot of it for me<br \/>\nseems either very theoretical and unrelated to Christian living<br \/>\nor unnecessarily narrow, even colonial<br \/>\nand inattentive to the ever-expanding diversity<br \/>\nthat is a hallmark of human existence.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that is why the scientific world fascinates me so much,<br \/>\nwhere curiosity and unsolved mysteries take the lead<br \/>\nand so many of my unexplored presumptions are exploded<br \/>\nwith new discoveries that give us hints<br \/>\nabout the world and cosmos that we inhabit<br \/>\nbut about which we know so little.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take a genius to perceive that the key metaphor<br \/>\nflowing through today\u2019s readings is water:<br \/>\nstories of gushing streams from rocks,<br \/>\nwisdom refrains warning against dried up hearts,<br \/>\nPauline allusions to the Holy Spirit being poured out<br \/>\nas an antidote to desiccated lives,<br \/>\nand liquid Jesus<br \/>\nspiritually shape-shifting as a Samaritan friend,<br \/>\na bucket-less font of wisdom,<br \/>\nand a purveyor of living water.<\/p>\n<p>Awash in such aquatic imagery a preacher could ponder<br \/>\nall of the biblical references to water<br \/>\nand there are well <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.duke.edu\/theconnection\/2014\/06\/05\/remembering-gods-gift-of-water\/\">over 700 of them to study<\/a><br \/>\nfrom the very beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation.<\/p>\n<p>But I have to admit that what captivated me more<br \/>\nis water\u2019s role in the survival of every known species:<br \/>\nfrom scorpions to rattlesnakes<br \/>\nand tuna fish to tigers.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean, of course, that all creatures \u201cdrink\u201d water.<br \/>\nSome, like freshwater fish or desert lizards,<br \/>\nabsorb water into their bodies from their environment<br \/>\nthrough a process of osmosis.<\/p>\n<p>As I got absorbed in this water thing<br \/>\nI learned how some creatures can survive<br \/>\nfor days, weeks, months, even years<a href=\"https:\/\/gulpmatrix.com\/how-long-can-animals-live-without-water\/#gsc.tab=0\"> without water:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cheetahs for 10 days<\/li>\n<li>bats for 6 months<\/li>\n<li>desert tortoises for a whole year<\/li>\n<li>and a kangaroo rat for up to 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Human beings don\u2019t have that kind of physical tolerance.<br \/>\nWe can survive for a month or longer without food,<br \/>\nif we are in relatively good health,<br \/>\nbut when it comes to water, it is more like 3 to 5 days<br \/>\nand dehydration can occur when losing as little<br \/>\nas 3% of our body water.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to understanding why water is so critical<br \/>\nfor our biological survival<br \/>\nscientists point to its <a href=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/uncategorized\/2019\/biological-roles-of-water-why-is-water-necessary-for-life\/\">many characteristics<\/a>, e.g.,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>its cohesive capacity to bond with other molecules,\n<ul>\n<li>sometimes called the universal solvent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0its ability to support cellular structure<\/li>\n<li>and its buffering power against dangerous effects of acids and bases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Folk wisdom teaches that you can\u2019t get blood out of a turnip,<br \/>\nyet scientists are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/1999\/07\/990715134714.htm\">genetically modifying plants<\/a><br \/>\nto produce human blood proteins.<\/p>\n<p>Similar folk proverbs contend that<br \/>\nyou can\u2019t squeeze water from a stone,<br \/>\nthough scientists are proving that wrong as well<br \/>\nwith astrophysicists extracting water from meteorites<br \/>\nand hydrogeologists extracting it from the earth\u2019s crust.<\/p>\n<p>One could metaphorically suggest that the exodus people<br \/>\nin the first reading<br \/>\n\u201csqueezed\u201d water out of the rock at Massah and Meribah<br \/>\nwhere they \u201ctested\u201d the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the Samaritan woman in John\u2019s Gospel<br \/>\ndid not have to squeeze life-giving water out of Jesus.<br \/>\nNo one did!<\/p>\n<p>Rather Jesus freely gives his life-giving water<br \/>\nwhich ironically squeezes the truth out of her,<br \/>\nliberating her for true worship and discipleship.<\/p>\n<p>In this encounter, the notable and essential characteristics<br \/>\nof Jesus\u2019 life-giving water<br \/>\nfor sustaining Christian living are clearly on display.<br \/>\nJesus-water, like it\u2019s physical counterpart,<br \/>\nalso has a cohesive capacity,<br \/>\nnot for the cohesion of molecules<br \/>\nbut for the cohesion of people<br \/>\nallowing even strangers and enemies,<br \/>\nSamaritans and Jews, to bond.<\/p>\n<p>And his gracious abundance has its own buffering power<br \/>\nagainst the acidic prejudice, violence, and hatred<br \/>\nthat too often poisons our environment.<\/p>\n<p>These effects permeate today\u2019s gospel<br \/>\nwhere his countercultural hospitality<br \/>\nnot only transformed one woman\u2019s life,<br \/>\nbut revealed the beauty of the stranger to his own disciples.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the \u201choly hydration\u201d of this one woman,<br \/>\ntriggered a kind of sacred osmosis through which<br \/>\nan entire community was transformed<br \/>\ninto a gathering of believers.<\/p>\n<p>It may be more than fanciful theologizing to suggest<br \/>\nthat water is a gift from heaven.<br \/>\nSome scientists believe water is an <a href=\"https:\/\/scitechinstitute.org\/earths-water-where-did-it-all-come-from\/\">alien visitor<\/a> to earth<br \/>\narriving 4 billion years ago when a heavy bombardment<br \/>\nof countless meteors delivered oceans to earth<\/p>\n<p>Supporting evidence is the existence<br \/>\nof huge amounts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30582-asteroid-mining-water-propulsion.html\">water in asteroids,<\/a><br \/>\nwhich scientists are hoping to extract<br \/>\nin order to establish infrastructures for surviving in space.<\/p>\n<p>Others believe, however, that water was inside our planet<br \/>\nfrom its origins, coming to the surface over time.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting evidence of this theory are<br \/>\nthe hydrous materials recently discovered inside the earth<br \/>\nprompting some to believe<br \/>\nthat there is more water below earth\u2019s surface<br \/>\nthan the oceans above (up to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/sciencenow\/la-sci-sn-modern-groundwater-20151116-story.html#:~:text=Hidden%20in%20the%20Earth's%20crust,in%20glaciers%20or%20ice%20caps.\"> 6 quintillion gallons!)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I have no idea which theory is scientifically accurate,<br \/>\nin Christ both have to be theologically true.<br \/>\nJesus is the life-giving water that comes down from heaven.<br \/>\nHe is the divine meteorite who bombards the world<br \/>\nwith torrents of grace and love.<br \/>\nHe is God\u2019s Word that<br \/>\nthe prophets foretold will rain down upon us (Isaiah 55).<br \/>\nHe is the ascended one who pours out his Spirit<br \/>\non disciples of every age.<\/p>\n<p>But this is also the Word made flesh<br \/>\nrevealed in earthbound wells, rivers and seas<br \/>\nwho unsealed the way to eternal life in his own baptism,<br \/>\nwho turned a seashore into a recruitment center for disciples<br \/>\nand who in teaching and healing,<br \/>\nwelcoming and embracing<br \/>\nquenched the thirst of everyone from the high born<br \/>\nto God\u2019s most beloved divorcee<br \/>\nas long as they were willing to drink of his gospel truth.<\/p>\n<p>The season of Lent can be appropriated in many ways<br \/>\nwith its ecclesial permission to cut back on chocolates and liquor<br \/>\nand drop a few pounds in the process;<br \/>\nor invitation to reflect upon our sinfulness<br \/>\nand schedule that annual confession.<\/p>\n<p>But this third Sunday of Lent,<br \/>\nwhich the church designates as the premiere day<br \/>\nfor the first public scrutiny of the elect<br \/>\nmoving towards Easter sacraments,<br \/>\nreminds us that Lent is first and foremost<br \/>\na font journey,<br \/>\na well-drawing opportunity,<br \/>\na rock-striking moment for those thirsting for life eternal.<\/p>\n<p>Scrutinies are an immersion into life-giving water<br \/>\nwith its cohesive capacities to bond us together in Christ,<br \/>\nits abilities quench every spiritual thirst<br \/>\nand its buffering power against greedy living<br \/>\ntoxic prejudices<br \/>\nand every form of violence<br \/>\nthat confront us with such distressing regularity.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it is not simply the elect<br \/>\nwho benefit from these pointed rituals<br \/>\nfor when Trent, Aaron, Sunayana, and Kelly<br \/>\nstep forward for exorcism and blessing<br \/>\nthey grace the whole of the church<br \/>\nwith their courageous witness.<\/p>\n<p>They rehydrate those of us who have strayed<br \/>\nfrom that baptismal well<br \/>\nand in a miracle of holy osmosis<br \/>\nallow those of us spiritually parched,<br \/>\neven scorched by the demands of everyday living,<br \/>\nto be vicariously renewed, revived, even restored<br \/>\nso that we might take up again<br \/>\nthe mission of the Samaritan affirming Christ<br \/>\nto proclaim good news to the poor,<br \/>\nfreedom for prisoners,<br \/>\nhealing for the afflicted,<br \/>\nand freedom for the oppressed.<\/p>\n<p>While not as difficult as cajoling water from a rock<br \/>\nthis \u201cwell journey\u201d is still demanding.<br \/>\nAnd so, for the elect as well as for those of us,<br \/>\nwashed in the gracious overflow of their journey<br \/>\nwith <a href=\"https:\/\/paintedprayerbook.com\/2017\/03\/18\/lent-3-we-will-find-wellsprings\/\">the poet<\/a>, we stand at the edge of that Samaritan well<br \/>\nand pray:<\/p>\n<p>If you stand<br \/>\nat the edge<br \/>\nof this blessing<br \/>\nand call down<br \/>\ninto it,<br \/>\nyou will hear<br \/>\nyour words<br \/>\nreturn to you.<\/p>\n<p>If you lean in<br \/>\nand listen close,<br \/>\nyou will hear<br \/>\nthis blessing<br \/>\ngive the story<br \/>\nof your life<br \/>\nback to you\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Sit at the rim<br \/>\nof this blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Press your ear<br \/>\nto its lip,<br \/>\nits sides,<br \/>\nits curves<br \/>\nthat were carved out<br \/>\nlong ago<br \/>\nby those whose thirst<br \/>\ndrove them deep,<br \/>\nthose who dug<br \/>\ninto the layers<br \/>\nwith only their hands<br \/>\nand hope.<\/p>\n<p>Rest yourself<br \/>\nbeside this blessing<br \/>\nand you will<br \/>\nbegin to hear<br \/>\nthe sound of water<br \/>\nentering the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Still yourself<br \/>\nand you will feel it<br \/>\nrising up within you,<br \/>\nfilling every
