{"id":61559,"date":"2023-02-24T13:38:10","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T19:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=61559"},"modified":"2023-02-27T09:28:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T15:28:33","slug":"from-the-wires-u-s-catholic-priests-are-increasingly-conservative-as-faithful-grow-more-liberal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/24\/from-the-wires-u-s-catholic-priests-are-increasingly-conservative-as-faithful-grow-more-liberal\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Wires: U.S. Catholic Priests Are Increasingly Conservative as Faithful Grow More Liberal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In December 2022, the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>ran a story under the headline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-catholic-priests-are-increasingly-conservative-as-faithful-grow-more-liberal-11671343608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-catholic-priests-are-increasingly-conservative-as-faithful-grow-more-liberal-11671343608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Catholic Priests Are Increasingly Conservative as Faithful Grow More Liberal: Almost half of young clergy in a survey disapprove of the liberalizing Pope Francis.&#8221;<\/a> Citing ongoing research by the Austin Institute via the Survey of American Catholic Priests, the <em>Journal\u00a0<\/em>reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>younger Catholic priests and priests ordained in more recent years tend to be noticeably more conservative than older priests on a host of issues, including politics, theology and moral teaching.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In contrast to this, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University found in 2021 that, among other figures,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>thirty-five percent of millennial Catholics have considered leaving the church because of its teaching on LGBT issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Journal\u00a0<\/em>commentators attribute this divergence to a postmodern generation of priests &#8220;disillusioned with the ideas of progress and religious pluralism that found favor at Vatican II&#8230;more likely to stress the reinforcement of Catholic identity and the winning of converts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most acutely to ecclesiastical life, the priestly generation gap extends to views on the current bishop of Rome:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Almost 80% of priests ordained before 1980 \u201capprove strongly\u201d of the current pontiff, compared with 20% of those ordained in 2010 or later, according to the 2021 survey. Nearly half of the younger priests disapprove of the pope, either \u201cstrongly\u201d or \u201csomewhat.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Older priests may find this inconsistent with ordained life, seeing a generation of clergy &#8220;indoctrinated into total loyalty to the pope&#8221; who then &#8220;so easily dropped this loyalty when a new pope was elected&#8230;now they are only loyal to the pope if he agrees with them,\u201d in the words of Rev. Thomas Reese, who was ordained in 1974.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, younger priests like Rev. Benjamin Petty (ordained 2019) maintain, \u201cI didn\u2019t become a priest because I wanted to be a culture warrior&#8230;I didn\u2019t want to be like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m going to get up in the pulpit and convince all these \u201970s libs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Pray Tell\u00a0<\/em>readers may wonder: what does such divergence mean for the celebration of the Liturgy in the coming years, not to mention the life and health of the Church?<\/p>\n<p>Time and the Holy Spirit will tell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Younger priests are more conservative, study finds.
