I am consistently astounded
\nnot just at what scientists discover, but also how
\nthey sometimes accidentally stumble onto truths big and small.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous chance finds
\nwas Alexander Fleming\u2019s discovery of penicillin:
\nhalfway through an experiment with bacteria
\nhe left his lab and went on vacation for two weeks.<\/p>\n

Alternately described as messy, unfastidious, or just a slob
\nhe left a stack of dirty dishes smeared with bacteria.
\nWhen he returned he found that bacteria had grown all over
\nexcept where a certain mold had formed.
\nAccording to one wag, that episode led to two things:
\nfirst, the discovery of the wonder drug penicillin,
\nand second, his wife hiring a maid.<\/p>\n

While the discovery of penicillin
\ndoesn\u2019t have much to do with today\u2019s readings,
\nanother somewhat obscure archeological discovery might.<\/p>\n

It is a well-established fact
\nthat about 90% of the world\u2019s population is right-handed.
\nSome scientists tried to figure out why that was so
\nand how long the trait has existed in our species.<\/p>\n

One of the ways they did this
\nwas by looking at teeth.
\nSounds odd or maybe simply smart!<\/p>\n

Over 100,000 years ago, maybe earlier
\nour ancestors started processing animal skins.
\nNot surprisingly, this seemed to coincide
\nwith the beginning of the last ice-age.<\/a>
\nThose of us who live through Chicago winters
\nunderstand the need for a warm coat.<\/p>\n

And what does this have to do with teeth?
\nWell, if you didn\u2019t have a hide stretcher,
\nand our ancient ancestors didn\u2019t,
\nthe easiest way for an individual to process a hide
\nwas to hold it in your teeth,
\nstretch it out with one hand,
\nwhile the other handheld a stone tool for scraping.<\/p>\n

Clever archaeologists<\/a> have found consistent evidence
\nof dental scratches where the owner
\naccidentally scrapped their teeth with these stone tools.<\/p>\n

The marks predominantly went from
\nthe upper left to the lower right side
\ndemonstrating that most early humans
\nwere also right-handed.<\/p>\n

Now I know this must be absolutely fascinating for you
\nbut there is a theological point to be made
\nand \u2013 with apologies to all dentists and hygienists \u2013
\nit\u2019s not about dental hygiene.<\/p>\n

Today, while we may no longer need
\nto stretch animal hides with our incisors,
\nour teeth still serve a vital role in our daily lives,
\nfrom nutrition to communication to self-esteem.
\nThat\u2019s why taking care of them
\nfrom the very beginning is so essential.<\/p>\n

Practices like Little Big Smiles<\/a>\u00a0understand
\nthe importance of starting good habits early.
\nWith a focus on comprehensive pediatric dental care,
\nthey provide children with a gentle,
\nsupportive introduction to oral health,
\nhelping them build the foundation
\nfor a lifetime of strong, functional, and beautiful smiles.<\/p>\n

Because while teeth may no longer
\nbear the burden of scraping hides,
\nthey still deserve the best care we can give.<\/p>\n

But no matter how diligent someone may be with brushing,
\nflossing, and routine checkups,
\nlife has a way of presenting the unexpected.
\nA sudden cracked tooth while eating,
\na lost crown during a busy workday,
\nor an injury from an active lifestyle can all disrupt daily routines and create an urgent need for care.<\/p>\n

In these moments, having access

\nan invaluable safety net,
\nallowing individuals to address problems
\nbefore they escalate
\ninto something more serious.<\/p>\n

Walter Wink (d. 2012) was a celebrated Methodist biblical scholar.
\nIn his book My Struggle to Be Human,<\/em>
\nthis of nonviolent resistance has a chapter subtitled:
\nturning the right cheek. [1]<\/p>\n

In it, he recalls a class discussion on today\u2019s gospel passage
\ninviting students to role-play the text: two volunteered.
\nThey faced off, deciding who would be the hitter
\nand who would be the hittee.
\nThen Wink asked the hitter,
\n\u201cHow will you strike your opponent?\u201d
\nThe student, part of the 90% right-handers club,
\nmade a fist with his right hand and faked a blow.<\/p>\n

Students objected, saying that the text doesn\u2019t say
\nright fist but right cheek.
\nTo strike someone on the right cheek would require
\na left-handed fist.
\nThe only way that a right-handed person
\ncould strike the right cheek
\nwas with the back of the right hand.<\/p>\n

Wink then deduces that what Jesus is describing
\nis not a fistfight, but an insult
\nintended not to injure but to humiliate.
\nA backhanded slap was the normal way
\nof admonishing inferiors not injuring one\u2019s equal.<\/p>\n

Wink further surmised that Jesus’ audience was not composed
\nof hitters but hittees \u2013 an audience of victims.
\nThese are the ones who suffered dehumanizing treatment
\nbecause of their status or gender, age, or race.<\/p>\n

But if that is so, why does Jesus counsel the already humiliated
\nto turn the other cheek?
\nWink concludes: because it is an act of defiance!
\nthat robs the oppressor of the power to humiliate.<\/p>\n

If you turn the other cheek you can\u2019t get backhanded again:
\nyour nose is in the way.<\/p>\n

If the oppressor hits you with his fist
\nhe makes you his equal
\nimplicitly acknowledging that
\nhe now stands toe to toe with a peer.<\/p>\n

Wink concludes, turning the other cheek
\nwas not an act of cowardice or passivity
\nbut an act of defiance.<\/p>\n

This past week, millions of USonians celebrated Valentine\u2019s Day.
\nExpenditures on the flowers, candy, dinners, and gifts
\ntotaled an estimated $26 billion:
\none wonders what that amount would do
\nto the recovery efforts in Turkey and Syria these days.<\/p>\n

Besides resistance to the opulence sometimes on display
\nin Valentine’s gifting like<\/a>
\nthe $363,000 Chopard de Rigo sunglasses,
\nthe $640,000 Montblanc pen,
\nor the 2.1-million-dollar Chopard watch.<\/p>\n

There is a growing resistance by some
\nto the very concept of Valentine\u2019s
\nwith its emphasis on amorous affection for significant others.<\/p>\n

So a few years back, there emerged Galentine\u2019s Day
\ninvented by a character on the sitcom Parks & Recreation
\ncelebrating the friendship between women on February 13th.<\/p>\n

Soon to follow was the more inclusive Palentine\u2019s Day
\nnot limited to women but a celebration of any friendship
\nalso occurring on the 13th of February.<\/p>\n

Words like Palentine and Galentine are what linguists call:
\nportMANteaus \u2013 a new word invented by combining two others like
\nbrunch = breakfast and lunch
\nmotel = motor and hotel
\nBrexit = Britain and exit.<\/p>\n

One wonders whether in today\u2019s readings
\nwe are invited to live into some new portmanteau reality
\nlike being frenemies to each other
\n(as in friendly enemies)
\nor authentic brangers to each other
\n(as in brothers to strangers)
\nor even follaborators, that is
\n(foes who collaborate).<\/p>\n

Of course, this is not just about linguistic niceties,
\nbut about learning to encounter each other,
\neven to differ with each other,
\nwithout the metaphorical backhand and insult.<\/p>\n

Our public and private discourse these days
\neasily degenerates into belittlement,
\ndisparagement and ridicule
\nfrom heckling leaders
\nin the hallowed halls of government
\nto the racial or sexist or agist slurs
\ntoo easily welling up in our hearts
\nthen spilling out on our tongues
\nplanting fresh seeds of prejudice in the young and innocent.<\/p>\n

It is admittedly difficult, but the gospels these weeks
\nchallenge us to acquire an embodied vocabulary
\nfor disagreement without diminishment,
\nfor opposition without oppression,
\neven for rivalry without vilification.<\/p>\n

While my very private father never spoke of this event
\nalmost 30 years ago I learned something about
\nfollaborators, brangers and frenemies through his eyes.<\/p>\n

The celebration of my parent\u2019s 50th wedding anniversary
\nincluded a 10-day trip for the three of us to Hawaii.
\nOn the last day of that trip we visited pearl harbor.<\/p>\n

On the launch out to the Arizona memorial
\nDad, who had served in the Navy during World War II,
\ngrew more and more agitated.
\nWhen I inquired what was bothering him
\nhe could only say, \u201cWhy are all of them here.\u201d
\nThe \u201cthem\u201d were the throngs of Japanese tourists,
\nmany my father\u2019s age, some of whom I imagined
\nhe had fought against in the Pacific.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s not much to the Arizona memorial:
\na small platform perched on the roof of a tomb,
\na few places to peer through the water,
\nto the turrets of the ship below,
\nand a surprisingly small inner sanctum,
\nwhere the names of those who rest in the waters below
\nare inscribed upon the wall.<\/p>\n

Separating that wall from a row of benches
\nwere a few waist-high crowd control poles
\nlinked to each other by red velvet ropes.<\/p>\n

As my parents and I sat in the front row
\nstaring at the wall of names through a steady drizzle
\nan unexpected ritual unfolded
\nas one elderly Japanese woman stepped forward
\ntook the flowered lei from around her neck
\nand placed it over one of the poles;
\nanother woman followed, then another, and another.<\/p>\n

Within minutes the poles and connected ropes
\nwere weighed down in an explosion of orchids.
\nDad was crying, then whispered something to my mother
\nwho removed the lei she was wearing.
\nHe then stood up and stepped into the flow of Asian women
\nwhom he towered over as he moved forward
\nplacing the delicate flowers on this makeshift shrine.<\/p>\n

As he returned to his seat, head bowed,
\nI was aware that these Japanese women, this ancient enemy,
\nhad entered into his holy of holies and taught him reverence,
\noffering glimpses of reconciliation in their symbolic dance.<\/p>\n

But the teaching was not quite over.
\nFor in a final ritual inversion
\nwhen the flower procession had apparently come to an end,
\none elderly Japanese man stood
\nand walked deliberately toward the same post Dad had approached.
\nHe removed the ring of orchids from around his neck
\nand placed them carefully on top of those my mother had worn.
\nHe then turned, facing my father seated before him,
\nand quietly bowed to the honored gentleman who gave me life
\nbefore returning to his seat.<\/p>\n

The rabbi was once asked by his students
\nwhy is it that in ages past
\nGod appeared to so many women and men
\nbut in this age, God seems to appear to no one.<\/p>\n

The rabbi\u2019s reply: because in this age
\nno one seems capable of bowing low enough.<\/p>\n

Bowing low is difficult, so often implying humiliation.
\nBut Jesus reminds us that such can actually be
\nan act of defiance in the face of a boastful world
\nOne which St. Paul takes on today, admonishing
\nthat we do not boast about,
\nwhat superior party, class, or race we imagine belonging to
\nbecause we first belong to each other
\nwhether frenemies, brangers, or follaborators.
\nAnd, in turn, we all belong to Christ.<\/p>\n

We pray that in our speaking and acting
\nwe might be willing to humble ourselves as Jesus did
\nso that we might put an end
\nto all literal and metaphorical backhanding
\nand the dignity of every child of God
\nmight thus be enhanced
\nthrough Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n
