{"id":61425,"date":"2023-02-01T14:18:02","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T20:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=61425"},"modified":"2023-02-16T14:26:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T20:26:46","slug":"does-the-presentation-of-the-lord-need-to-be-supplemented-by-the-world-day-of-prayer-for-consecrated-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/01\/does-the-presentation-of-the-lord-need-to-be-supplemented-by-the-world-day-of-prayer-for-consecrated-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Does the Presentation of the Lord need to be supplemented by the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Call me a killjoy, but I don\u2019t really like the fact that the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is the day when the Catholic Church observes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/committees\/clergy-consecrated-life-vocations\/world-day-consecrated-life\">World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have nothing against Consecrated Life or those who have followed their vocation there.\u00a0 But it seems to detract from the Presentation.\u00a0 The Presentation is a beautiful feast in and of itself and I think that all Christians need to benefit from its message of how the Light of Christ can penetrate out lives and enlighten us. If we have the possibility, and this is often not possible in daily parish Masses, it is good to have the prescribed Procession (which Egeria bears witness to in Fourth Century Jerusalem).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/25\/days-of-prayer\/\">posted before<\/a> about what I consider to be a problem.\u00a0 It is not that it is bad to pray for those in Religious Life or even to recognize them in the liturgy.\u00a0 But surely the priority is the celebration of the Paschal Mystery. Many people who come to our churches are facing serious problems and need the help of basic Christian celebration and catechesis.\u00a0 Obviously, it is fine if a parish is being served by religious of a particular congregation or order that they emphasize particular feasts.\u00a0 It is only natural that a parish served by Dominicans celebrate the feast day of St. Dominic and so forth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liturgy is often multivalent, different images and emphases converge around the Paschal Mystery. Different people will take different things from a celebration. What strikes and helps me, might not strike or help you.\u00a0But I think that in our day when most will recognize a certain crisis in the Church and a lack of formation, that we are better served by celebrating the feast days in their primary fulness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Days of Prayer or particular events in recognition of the contribution of different groups are fine. I think that \u00a0But they simply cannot be allowed to eclipse the primary focus of the liturgy. I would suggest that we ask ourselves whether the celebration of particular Days of Prayer on the same day as liturgical observances is in the spirit of \u00a0<em>Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/em> 108 which reminds us that, \u201cthe minds of the faithful must be directed primarily toward the feasts of the Lord whereby the mysteries of salvation are celebrated in the course of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 id=\"firstHeading\" class=\"firstHeading mw-first-heading\">Cover art: Marianne Stokes Candlemas Day from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Marianne_Stokes_Candlemas_Day.jpg\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Call me a killjoy, but I don\u2019t really like the fact that the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is the day when the Catholic Church observes the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life. In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
