{"id":60895,"date":"2022-11-02T01:15:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T06:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60895"},"modified":"2022-11-16T11:11:48","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T17:11:48","slug":"brief-book-review-the-art-of-gathering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/02\/brief-book-review-the-art-of-gathering\/","title":{"rendered":"Brief Book Review: <i>The Art of Gathering<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters<\/em><br \/>\nBy Priya Parker<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60896 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9781594634932.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9781594634932.jpeg 267w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/9781594634932-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>Who\u2019s it for?<\/strong> According to Parker, <em>The Art of Gathering<\/em> is for those who want \u201cto take an ordinary moment with others and make it unforgettable\u2014and meaningful\u201d (xiii). Liturgists (and those who plan parties with the belief that such gatherings can give us a glimpse of the feast to come) will find a few treasures of wisdom amidst a numbing, repetitive pattern of here\u2019s-a-principle followed by one or more stories from the author\u2019s experience. Skimming the book would the most fruitful approach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this book useful?<\/strong> Although the author\u2019s examples primarily relate to the business world or personal gatherings, a thoughtful reader will be able to make connections with life in the church\u2014both liturgical gatherings and those outside the liturgy. For example, her principle (\u201cthe kindness of exclusion\u201d) in chapter 2 is primarily for \u201csecular\u201d gatherings, but in the Protestant world of \u201cy\u2019all are welcome at the table,\u201d Parker\u2019s cautions against \u201cover-including\u201d people could give parishes and denominations wrestling with this eucharistic trend some food for thought. [Pun intended.] When making the case to exclude some, she returns to the original purpose of the gathering, pointing out ways in which inclusivity can erode that purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What will get you thinking?<\/strong> To illustrate the principle (and title of chapter 4), \u201cCreate a temporary alternative world,\u201d Parker describes in detail the phenomenon of <em>D\u00eener en Blanc<\/em>, an annual event in many major cities around the world. That the Eucharist is the Church\u2019s way of creating a temporary alternative world will not be lost on the reader, and the author\u2019s commentary can open up the reader\u2019s thinking about ways in which we\u2019ve made this holy meal into something mundane and meaningless by obsessing over efficiency, hygiene, or narrow theological thinking. Keep in mind her mantra\u2014that gatherings ought be unforgettable and meaningful\u2014but don\u2019t push the <em>D\u00eener en Blanc<\/em> analogy too far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applications: <\/strong>Parker uses some pithy phrases that translate well into an ecclesial world. For example, in chapter 3, she encourages hosts to practice \u201cgenerous authority,\u201d that is, to \u201crun [a gathering] with a strong, confident hand, but \u2026 [to] run [it] selflessly, for the sake of others\u201d (81). Such language can easily be applied to presiding at worship, to organizing a funeral lunch, and to leading all types of church meetings. The author also articulates three goals of the host which are easily applicable to Christian community: \u201cprotect your guests\u201d (from boredom and technology); \u201cequalize your guests\u201d; and \u201cconnect your guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For readers involved in adult catechumenate ministry, Parker\u2019s language of \u201cushering\u201d and \u201ccrossing thresholds\u201d in chapter 5 will resonate deeply. Recognizing that some religious rituals function to \u201ctransition from one state to another\u201d (167), her interlocutor on this subject is a performance artist, and Parker considers both physical and psychological ways that a host can \u201cusher\u201d guests across a threshold to a new experience. The chapter\u2019s title, \u201cNever start a funeral with logistics,\u201d has made me rethink those ubiquitous announcements prior to a special\/occasional liturgy.<\/p>\n<p>In chapter 6, \u201cKeep your best self out of my gathering,\u201d the author makes a case for establishing a process in groups that encourages people to be authentic, to be their \u201creal\u201d selves. To accomplish an authentic ethos within a group, Parker encourages structuring an initial gathering in a way that allow people to be vulnerable with one another. She writes, \u201cthe whole point of this dinner is to try out another way of being together \u2026\u201d (221). Her words describe what living together as the Body of Christ means, that is, showing those obsessed with worldly success (wealth, beauty, youth, perfect job, family, etc.) the grace and freedom of \u201canother way of being together\u201d\u2014as flawed and sinful people, yet redeemed and forgiven by Christ, who strive to honor the dignity of every person and serve their neighbor in need.<\/p>\n<p>Parker, Priya. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priyaparker.com\/book-art-of-gathering\"><em>The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters<\/em><\/a>.
