{"id":60801,"date":"2022-11-24T07:00:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-24T13:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60801"},"modified":"2022-12-05T02:04:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T08:04:18","slug":"gospel-communion-1st-sunday-of-advent-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/24\/gospel-communion-1st-sunday-of-advent-3\/","title":{"rendered":"GOSPEL COMMUNION: 1st Sunday of Advent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>November 27, 2022 : 1st Sunday of Advent<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-60802\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-600x308.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-600x308.jpg 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-768x394.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-1536x789.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/November-27-2022-graphic-file-2048x1052.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s antiphon begins a new liturgical year with a mosaic of Advent themes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The springboard for the opening phrase is to be found near the beginning of today\u2019s 2nd Reading (\u201cit is the hour now for you to awake from sleep\u201d, Romans 13:11) as well as Jesus\u2019s exhortation in the Gospel to stay awake (Matthew 24:42); the second phrase derives from the 1st Reading and the image of the nations streaming towards to the Mountain of the Lord (Isaiah 2:2-3), that same mountain where the Lord of Hosts will prepare for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6); while the final phrase comes from Psalm 85, that quintessential Advent psalm that is suggested for use by the ICEL 1998 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiphonal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2010 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiphonary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as the 1974 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graduale Romanum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where mercy and faithfulness, justice and peace, are all core elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also are invited to come to Communion, the feast where those same core elements will figure at the table in the sacrificed Body and Blood of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lilting melody, sometimes called BESAN\u00c7ON after the town in Eastern France, was originally sung to the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantons, bargi\u00e9s, Nou\u00e9 Nou\u00e9 !<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [\u201cSing, O shepherds, No\u00ebl, No\u00ebl!\u201d], translated as \u201cShepherds, shake off your drowsy sleep\u201d, the same tune later used by Eleanor Farjeon for her carol \u201cPeople, look east; the time is near\u201d. The Collegeville Composers borrowed the first two phrases and the very last (sixth).
