Both antiphon and psalm are a mosaic, derived from reflection on scripture.<\/span><\/p>\n

The antiphon\u2019s first source was John 6:40, the final lines of today\u2019s Gospel:<\/span><\/p>\n

…everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.<\/span><\/p>\n

From there, the Collegeville Composers Group went further on in Bread of Life Discourse to John 6:56:<\/span><\/p>\n

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now add to the mix one of the Communion antiphons in the 1998 Antiphonal:<\/span><\/p>\n

I am the resurrection and the life.
\nBelieve in me and you shall live,
\neven though you die.
\nLive and believe in me,
\nand you will never die.<\/p>\n

(cf. John 11:25-26) and the mosaic is complete.<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalm verses are superimposed on the antiphon, but may also be sung separately. Verse 1 is lines 2-5 of the 1998 Antiphonal text just quoted, Verse 2 is largely another Communion antiphon for this day from the 1998 Antiphonal, using 2 Esdras 2 (or 4 Ezra 2, depending on which bible translation you use), verses 35 and 34.<\/span><\/p>\n

The remaining psalm verses use large extracts from Psalm 27, so appropriate for today. We, too, can savor the sweetness of the Lord, even if we do not yet behold his temple.<\/span><\/p>\n
