One of the most celebrated and effective literary devices
\nfor developing a storyline
\nactually used by Luke in today\u2019s gospel
\nis the secret, narrow, or hidden passageway,
\nsometimes deployed as the magical or sealed door.<\/p>\n

Think back on the famous door
\nin The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
\nthat opened into a wondrous kingdom;
\nthe tiny passageway in Wonderland that required
\nAlice to consume magical cake and liquid in order to enter;
\nand of course, Tolkien\u2019s secret entrance to the mines of M\u00f3ria
\nor hidden keyhole to the Lonely Mountain.<\/p>\n

These fictional passageways serve as potent metaphors
\nfor life\u2019s journey, for choosing to grow and change
\noften at great risk.<\/p>\n

A favorite example of such a metaphorical journey
\nis the 1994 movie \u201cStargate,\u201d that eventually morphed
\ninto a huge entertainment franchise.
\nIn the original film,
\na fictional wormhole between two universes
\nopened the way to multiple evolutions in the story
\nin which lead characters
\nand even an entire oppressed people
\nboldly chose to journey a difficult path
\nthat eventually resulted in both
\npersonal and societal liberations.<\/p>\n

The point of these mystical passageways is precisely to choose.
\nFew writers understood that better than C.S. Lewis,
\nauthor of The Chronicles of Narnia
\nwho, in a BBC broadcast during World War II
\nbefore he wrote his celebrated novels, noted:<\/p>\n

The hall is a place to wait in, a place from which to try the various doors, not a place to live in. For that purpose the worst of the rooms \u2026 is \u2026 preferable. It is true that some people may find they have to wait in the hall for a considerable time, while others feel certain almost at once which door they must knock at. I do not know why there is this difference, but I am sure God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait. When you do get into your room you will find that the long wait has done you some kind of good which you would not have had otherwise. But you must regard it as waiting, not as camping. You must keep on praying for light. [1]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Most of us have not had direct experiences
\nwith enchanted doors that require us to shrink,
\nmagical wardrobes that open up into fantastic kingdoms,
\nor cosmic wormholes that can transport us to another universe
\nthough we have all had our share
\nof waiting in hallways or lines
\nto board a plane or enter an event.<\/p>\n

In a contemporary twist on the \u201cnarrow gate\u201d in today\u2019s gospel
\none writer<\/a> has suggested that this pivotal metaphor
\nmight best be reimaged
\nas a modern turnstile.<\/p>\n

While some might consider this a little banal if not irreverent,
\nI think the analogy holds a lot of promise.
\nWhile this $300 million + industry is rapidly evolving
\nfrom speed gates to full-height doors
\nand from tripod designs to high-tech optical designs,
\nwhatever their design they provide multiple and distinct benefits<\/a>
\nsuch as enhanced security,
\nincreased efficiency for entrances and exits,
\nenforcing required entry fees,
\nand providing efficient analysis of attendance.<\/p>\n

From a more theological perspective,
\nand I know it sounds a little odd to theologize about a turnstile,
\nturnstiles take each individual seriously
\ncount each soul as significant
\nand insure that no one\u2019s presence is overlooked or ignored.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, they strip us of excess baggage:
\nsomething I have experienced too often
\nwhen taking the Blue Line to O\u2019Hare
\nand trying to maneuver my roller bag through
\nthese unforgiving obstacles.<\/p>\n

As in any spiritual endeavor,
\nentering a turnstile also involves certain risks:
\nthe possibility of getting stuck and embarrassed,
\nof sustaining personal injury
\nand even the remote possibility of death: it has happened.<\/p>\n

Engaging in this spiritual daydreaming
\nmight have the unfortunate result
\nof conjuring golden turnstiles at the pearly gates
\nthat control entry into God\u2019s heavenly courts.<\/p>\n

Multiple cartoonists have gone in that direction
\nand there are even several sounds, such as
\nMarcus Gilvear\u2019s \u201cTurnstiles to Heaven,\u201d and
\nRoger Manning\u2019s \u201cTurnstile at Heaven\u2019s Gate\u201d
\nthat can serve as a soundtrack to these daydreams.<\/p>\n

But this modern metaphor is not intended
\nto summon images of physical barriers to God,
\nor spur visions of heavenly turnstiles
\neven if they are wrought from the purest of gold.<\/p>\n

No, for the narrow gate in the gospels is not a thing:
\nit is a person.
\nJesus is the true narrow gate through which we must pass.<\/p>\n

Now of course that could sound quite daunting
\nI mean, who could get through a Jesus turnstile
\ngiven his human perfection, and godly holiness?
\nBut the irony is that the God of Jesus Christ makes this
\na very generous passageway
\nas made perfectly clear in today\u2019s readings.<\/p>\n

Thus that shocking passage from Isaiah
\nin which the God of the chosen people,
\nwho originally deemed the Israelites his only beloved
\nnow extends the covenant to every known nation,
\ndesignates gentiles as siblings to the Israelites
\neven announcing that some of them
\nwill be chosen as priests and Levites,
\ngiving them access to the very inner sanctum of God.<\/p>\n

Similarly in today\u2019s gospel,
\nJesus looks beyond his inner circle
\nwhen envisioning the vastness of God\u2019s beloved,
\ngoing so far as to clarify that a certain group \u2013
\nwho thought they could rely upon their social connections
\nand longtime chumminess with Jesus,
\n(after all, they frequently shared a beer & a burger
\nwith the Only Begotten) \u2013
\nwould not make it through his divine scanner
\nwhile hoards of others would be invited
\nto recline at table with him.<\/p>\n

While that might sound like a contradiction,
\nlegions of outsiders crashing the Jesus banquet
\nwhile old tavern buddies never make it past sacred security,
\nLuke\u2019s vocabulary here solves this riddle,
\nfor he has Jesus rejecting those whom he calls \u201cevildoers\u201d
\na phrase more accurately translated as
\npurveyors of iniquity
\nworkers of unrighteousness,
\nand peddlers of injustice.<\/p>\n

It is only those who uphold the justice of God
\nno matter what their religious affiliation,
\ntheir spiritual alliances,
\ntheir belief systems,
\nwho will pass through the Jesus gate
\nand be deemed as worthy of salvation.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis has explicitly confirmed this justice key
\nwhen in his 2013 encyclical \u201cThe Joy of the Gospel\u201d
\nspoke of those who do not consider themselves
\npart of any religious tradition
\nyet who sincerely seek the truth
\nas \u201cprecious allies in the commitment
\nto defending human dignity
\nin building peaceful coexistence between peoples
\nand in protecting creation.\u201d [2]<\/p>\n

Francis has continued to stress this point
\nnoting that doing good is key to redemption
\nand not just having a baptismal certificate
\nburied somewhere in a scrapbook.<\/p>\n

This is completely resonant with the famous
\nsheep and goats passage in Matthew 25.
\nNowhere in that passages does Jesus say that judgment
\nis based on a fulsome prayer life,
\nritual purity,
\nor religious affiliation.<\/p>\n

Rather, it is all based on what we do and the justice we enact.
\nThus all prayer, all worship, and all religious affiliation
\nmust be in service of that call to unequivocal love.<\/p>\n

The holy irony in this revelation
\nis that the narrow gate
\ncan properly be understood
\nnot only as the person of Jesus,
\nbut more broadly as the justice enacted in his name.<\/p>\n

So when we overlook injustice
\nand ignore those suffering prejudice, exclusion, and diminishment
\nthe narrow gate closes,
\nthe turnstile locks. The door is sealed.<\/p>\n

Thus it is incumbent upon us to seek out
\nwise gate liberators,
\ngifted door openers,
\nand vigilant turnstile operators
\nwho lift the veil on the marginalized,
\nthe downtrodden,
\nthe overlooked,
\nand reveal how to embrace them as living keys
\nand as spiritual locksmiths
\nfor prying open that godly gate
\noften rusted shut by our own prejudice.<\/p>\n

As some of you know, one of my ministries for my community
\nis promoting the canonization of the Capuchin Solanus Casey
\nwho died in 1957 and was beatified in 2017.<\/p>\n

Solanus was an unlikely gate opener
\nsince he failed out of the diocesan seminary
\nand was encouraged to take an intellectually
\nless rigorous path – like joining the Capuchins.<\/p>\n

Even with us, he struggled.
\nAn obviously holy guy, they eventually ordained him
\nbut because of his academic difficulties
\nhe was never allowed to perform public sacraments –
\nno marriages, no baptisms, no confession
\nand at first not even allowed to preach.<\/p>\n

Not knowing what to do with this simplex priest,
\nsuperiors assigned him to the ministry of porter:
\nYep… he answered the door.<\/p>\n

While another might have labored grudgingly at this task,
\nSolanus brought unpretentious joy and care
\nin response to every knock, every ring of the doorbell.<\/p>\n

Eventually, he became the reason why people came to the door.
\nPeople of every social status
\nfrom across the religious spectrum, including atheists,
\nbut especially the sick, the broken,
\nthe downtrodden, and the hopeless
\nsought the balm of his presence.<\/p>\n

When Solanus died in 1957 over 20,000 paid their last respects
\nand when he was beatified in November of 2017
\n70,000 filled Detroit\u2019s Ford Field in gratitude
\nfor this simple man
\nwho literally and figuratively
\nopened for multitudes the very door to the sacred:
\nthe unlikeliest of God\u2019s turnstiles.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s second reading
\nwe are advised to be disciplined in gospel ways,
\ndisciplined to practice justice,
\nto expand our narrow minds and hearts
\nso that we might honor those society diminishes
\ncasts aside and overlooks.<\/p>\n

For, ironically, they hold the key to our own salvation.
\nFor when we open a door for them
\nthey, in turn, open the door of the just Christ for us
\nwhom we embraced as Lord and God forever and ever.<\/p>\n
