{"id":60550,"date":"2022-08-10T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T16:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60550"},"modified":"2022-08-18T13:13:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T18:13:25","slug":"help-theres-a-monstrance-in-my-mass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/10\/help-theres-a-monstrance-in-my-mass\/","title":{"rendered":"Help, there&#8217;s a Monstrance in my Mass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Roman Catholics know, we have officially entered our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/resources\/welcome-national-eucharistic-revival\">National Eucharistic Revival<\/a>,\u201d as of the Feast of Corpus Christi (June 16, 2022).\u00a0 This revival, a historic but not unprecedented occurrence, hopes to inspire new love for Christ in the midst of our muddling mis-hap of a modern world.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60552 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/National-Eucharistic-Revival.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"167\" \/>A new love for Christ might inspire us to live justly, embrace wisdom, and love and believe in God\u2019s mercy for ourselves and for others.\u00a0 I am hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>With such hopes, I entered the Corpus Christi Sunday Mass on June 16 (rarely does anything trump a Sunday, but this is one of the exceptions).\u00a0 I wondered what we might experience on this national kick-off day of Eucharistic revival.\u00a0 This Feast might inspire the singing of so many wonderful hymns, the announcement of compelling devotions for the parish (like eucharistic processions or even mystery plays [!!!]), let alone the Word of the Gospel for this day, or the call to be transformed by the Eucharist to be as Christ in the world.\u00a0 We could even remember the story of the unshakable faith of Saint Juliana of Li\u00e8ge, whose mystical vision inspired the Feast and its celebration in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>But, if you are waiting for the other shoe to drop, get ready for it.\u00a0 We did not receive an invitation for eucharistic devotion at some remote point in parish life.\u00a0 After the homily, we stopped everything\u2014and our presider pulled out the monstrance and put it on the altar, right smack dab in the middle of Mass.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all a little blurry to me\u2014I\u2019m not sure if we actually said the Creed, or if petitions happened.\u00a0 I do know that the congregation all stared rather dumbly while Father was affixing the monstrance with its host for adoration (he had to tell them to kneel).\u00a0 Helpfully, he did explain where to find the appropriate prayers for exposition in the backs of our hymnals, and the faithful obediently followed his instruction.\u00a0 I did, too, but I just felt\u2026confused.\u00a0 Celebration of the Eucharist.\u00a0 Devotion to the Eucharist.\u00a0 Which is better?\u00a0 Which were we doing right now?!?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60551\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60551\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60551\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance-600x337.png 600w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance-1536x862.png 1536w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Monstrance.png 1774w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/angelusnews.com\/faith\/adoration-is-like-radiotherapy-for-our-sinfulness-says-vaticans-new-liturgy-chief\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/angelusnews.com\/faith\/adoration-is-like-radiotherapy-for-our-sinfulness-says-vaticans-new-liturgy-chief\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I knelt there, staring, and am ashamed to admit I had trouble focusing.\u00a0 I found myself asking, &#8220;Does it make any sense to be conversing with your beloved, and say, &#8216;wait a minute, let me take a look at you for a minute,&#8217;
