Yesterday\u2019s Times of India <\/em>reports<\/a> that 50.000 Syro-Malabar Christians of the Ernakulam Angamaly archdiocese of the Syro Malabar Church took to the streets to protest in favor of celebrating the Eucharist in the versus populum<\/em> orientation and in protest of the removal of their archbishop, Mar Antony Kariyil CMI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is undoubtedly a very \u00a0convoluted story, for more background see my previous posts \u00a0(here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>).\u00a0 The Pilar has also provided a good background<\/a> on the situation.\u00a0 It is important to note that this is not just a liturgical dispute.\u00a0 The problem is exacerbated by other issues including financial scandal due to selling some Church property at what many consider to be $10,000,000 below market value.\u00a0 This has obliged Cardinal George Alencherry<\/a> to step aside from governing the archdiocese and the Vatican appointed Archbishop Kariyil to manage the day to day affairs of the archdiocese.\u00a0 But Archbishop Kariyil allowed the priests to continue to celebrate the Eucharist versus populi<\/em> and it seems that this was the reason that the Nuncio to India obliged him to resign last week, reportedly <\/a>giving him 24 hours to write a letter of resignation.<\/p>\n

So everything is far from well in the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese. I imagine that the various news reports are not enough for most of us to understand the different nuances and various currents of internal Church issues that are at play here.\u00a0 But, all things being equal, I would still propose that the celebration of the Eucharist versus populum<\/em> is the best manner to celebrate the Eucharist today.\u00a0 However, there are probably many factors that I am unaware of. The history of contact between the native Saint Thomas Christians of India and the Roman Church has been marked by problems and serious misunderstandings since the early sixteenth century culminating in the 1599 Synod of Diamper<\/a> and the resulting cleaving<\/a> of the Church into at least seven smaller Churches.<\/p>\n

Sadly liturgical disputes, such as this one, are often symptoms of deeper problems in the life of the Church. When we face a lack of communion within a Christian community, then, it is more than likely that there is a symphony of problems to solve and that a simple rubrical decision will not solve things. Pope Francis may well have been thinking of this situation in the Syro-Malabar Church when he warned a gathering of Eastern liturgists in Rome last February that \u201cif we give scandal by our liturgical disputes \u2026 we play the game of the master of division.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
