{"id":60516,"date":"2022-08-06T19:45:58","date_gmt":"2022-08-07T00:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60516"},"modified":"2022-11-17T23:36:29","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T05:36:29","slug":"words-made-flesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/06\/words-made-flesh\/","title":{"rendered":"Words Made Flesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>God\u2019s Word and words made flesh in preaching and worship matter.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Communication and not the noise of slogans or the repetition of cliches is becoming more and more difficult. . . speech is in danger of perishing or being perverted in the amplified noise of beasts. . . .There is therefore it seems to me every reason why we should attempt to cry out to one another and comfort one another insofar as this may be possible, with the truth of Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Thomas Merton, <em>Seeds of Destruction<\/em> (1964)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Donna Giver-Johnston frames many of the chapters of <em>Writing for the Ear, Preaching from the Heart (<\/em>Fortress Press, 2021) with quotes like this one from Thomas Merton. As I prepare to teach a worship and preaching course to divinity school students this fall, I am reflecting on the noisiness and wordiness of today\u2019s world. What Merton observed in the 1960s rings true today. Life-giving communication does indeed seem to be \u201cin danger of perishing or being perverted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How do we listen through and in the noise for God\u2019s voice, the divine voice that in beginning spoke light into the night and whispered life into human souls? And how do we speak words of Gospel comfort and truth that stir people\u2019s weary hearts and heal their sound-fatigued spirits?<\/p>\n<p>While Merton\u2019s insights about the looming danger of his time magnify the importance of clear and authentic preaching for ours, this is not my primary reason for teaching worship and preaching in 2022. I am energized about exploring preaching and worship with my students because I cherish the sacred opportunity to hear the tone and timbre of God\u2019s voice in their voices as they preach for the first time or explore new aspects of their proclaiming vocalizations. I also delight in the persistent beauty and power of homiletical and liturgical embodiments of God\u2019s Word to heal, inspire, and transform.<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s Word and words made flesh in preaching and worship matter.<\/p>\n<p>This is the mysterious wonder of worship as a ritual act of hearing and embodying God\u2019s Word proclaimed. In worship, we hear God\u2019s Word spoken. We also encounter God\u2019s Word come to vivid life through color, texture, movement, sound, smell, and taste. God\u2019s Word comes alive to worshipers in everyday-sacred actions bread-breaking, blessing, baptizing, and anointing. Through worship and preaching\u2014as it happens in churches and on social media platforms and in hospices and at bedsides and gravesides and countless other unexpectedly sacred places\u2014we \u201ccry out to one another and comfort one another. . . with the truth of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>And that truth\u2014that Gospel speech&#8211;sings through the noise to change hearts and worlds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words Made Flesh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Words.<br \/>\nMatter.<br \/>\nIn us.<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s love<br \/>\nmade skin and bones<br \/>\nmuscle and marrow<br \/>\nhands and hearts<br \/>\nGod\u2019s words.<br \/>\nMatter.<br \/>\nIn us.<\/p>\n<p>No more speeches or spin doctors,<br \/>\ndebates or diatribes\u2014no&#8211;<br \/>\nGod\u2019s nouns and adjectives and verbs<br \/>\nmade alive<br \/>\nwelcoming<br \/>\nrespecting<br \/>\nembracing<br \/>\nincarnating belonging<br \/>\nin us.<\/p>\n<p>Words made matter,<br \/>\nplanted in salvaged soil<br \/>\nreclaimed<br \/>\nrestored<br \/>\nvalued<br \/>\nsavored and saving<br \/>\nhope<br \/>\nin us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>God\u2019s Word and words made flesh in preaching and worship matter.
