\"\"<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s Missal antiphon (You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste \u2014 Wisdom 16:20) is based on the old Benediction versicle and response, Panem de caelo praestitisti eis<\/em>; but this did not seem close enough to the thrust of the readings, especially the Gospel.<\/p>\n

Instead, the Collegeville Composers produced a new antiphon based on Luke 21 from today\u2019s Gospel with a large dose of Colossians 3:1 from today\u2019s 2nd Reading. The earthly treasure that we store up or seek (bread) is nothing compared with the \u201cliving bread that lasts for ever\u201d that we receive in Communion.<\/p>\n

The tune is from the famous Lutheran hymn Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme<\/em> (\u201cWake, O Wake, A Voice Is Calling\u201d). This touch of Advent in midsummer ties all four readings (psalm included) together.<\/p>\n

The psalm verses provide selections from Pss 36 and 63, suggested in the ICEL 1998 Antiphonal and the 2012 Antiphonary. The tone offers a mini-refrain at the end of every second line, consisting of the last third of the full antiphon.<\/p>\n
