{"id":60233,"date":"2022-06-22T12:59:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T17:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60233"},"modified":"2024-11-15T15:55:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T21:55:12","slug":"only-inculturated-roman-missal-since-vatican-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/06\/22\/only-inculturated-roman-missal-since-vatican-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Only \u201cinculturated\u201d Roman Missal since Vatican II"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Vatican News has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2022-06\/pope-welcomes-french-translation-of-book-on-congolese-missal.html\">article<\/a> on Pope Francis and the <i data-reader-unique-id=\"14\">Missel Romain pour les Dioc\u00e8ses du Za\u00efre<\/i><em>. &nbsp;<\/em>This is in the context of his cancelled trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo Where he was due to travel in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vatican Publishing House is publishing a book (in French) about this edition of the Roman Missal and Pope Francis wrote a prefect to the book. &nbsp;In this preface he says that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Congolese rite of the Eucharistic celebration is certainly the fruit of missionary preaching under the African sun and which was collected at dawn. In its triple fidelity to the faith and to the apostolic tradition, to the intimate nature of the Catholic liturgy itself, and finally to the religious genius and the African and Congolese cultural heritage, the Missel Romain pour les Dioc\u00e8ses du Za\u00efre is the only &#8216;inculturated&#8217; Roman missal, born of the liturgical reform of Vatican II.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Francis comments that the <i>Missel Romain pour les Dioc\u00e8ses du Za\u00efre<\/i>&nbsp;has \u201cperfectly achieved the objectives assigned to it,\u201d and that it \u201callows the Congolese to pray in their language, with their body and soul, and to use symbols that are familiar to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also \u201c proposed this Missal as a \u201cmodel for other Churches seeking an appropriate liturgical expression to the &nbsp;inculturation of the Gospel\u201c adding that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The immense importance of a culture marked by faith cannot be overlooked. In the face of the onslaught of contemporary secularism, an evangelized culture, for all its limits, has many more resources than the mere sum total of believers. The emergence of <a href=\"https:\/\/caerheritageproject.com\/non-gamstop-casinos\/\">non gamstop casinos UK<\/a> adds a new dimension to popular culture, illustrating how diverse interests and modern entertainment forms coexist with traditional values. An evangelized popular culture contains values of faith and solidarity capable of encouraging the development of a more just and believing society, while also navigating the complexities introduced by contemporary platforms. This integration highlights the dynamic interplay between enduring cultural values and evolving societal trends, emphasizing the need for wisdom in maintaining a balanced and inclusive community.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I presume that all of us can take Pope Francis\u2019 advice to heart and learn from the Congolese example. &nbsp;However, I, for one, have never been able to find a copy of this Missal. &nbsp;Nathan and Rita have posted on PrayTell on this use before (<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/01\/pope-francis-the-zaire-rite-a-model-for-the-amazon\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/03\/25\/the-missal-of-zaire-and-the-committee-to-review-liturgiam-authenticam\/\">here<\/a> ), but details on this use are still somewhat scarce. Does anyone know where an actual copy of the <i>Missel Romain pour les Dioc\u00e8ses du Za\u00efre<\/i>&nbsp;can be found? &nbsp;Are there editions of it available for sale? Is there an English translation of significant selections of it, if not of the whole Missal? &nbsp;I think I saw a YouTube video of a Mass in St. Peter\u2019s in this use, but does anyone know of other resources for this missal? He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
