{"id":60130,"date":"2022-06-10T09:09:30","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T14:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=60130"},"modified":"2022-06-19T18:33:42","modified_gmt":"2022-06-19T23:33:42","slug":"my-jesus-tastes-like-hand-sanitizer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2022\/06\/10\/my-jesus-tastes-like-hand-sanitizer\/","title":{"rendered":"My Jesus Tastes Like Hand Sanitizer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We know that senses are important.\u00a0 When Jesus heals, he so often touches our senses: mud on our eyes, hands on our ears, spit on our face.\u00a0 When we worship, we hear his Word, taste his body (and his blood, but I\u2019m not holding my breath on the return of that one), and see his face in the Body of Christ surrounding us.\u00a0 We participate in Jesus with our senses.<\/p>\n<p>But, Liturgy in this modern world has presented us with yet another challenge. \u00a0For most of us, when seeking the sweet scents of liturgical worship, our noses are no longer beset by beeswax candles, flowering plants or (*gasp*) Three Kings incense.<\/p>\n<p>My Jesus smells like hand sanitizer.<\/p>\n<p>It is understandable and right that, in caring for the common good, we are taking precautions during this continued global pandemic.\u00a0 In fact, when I consider all the past situations in which we did <em>not <\/em>use sanitizer, I shudder: bank ATM\u2019s, ball pits at children\u2019s play areas of yesteryear, door<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60131 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Back-of-Church.jpg 1672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> handles EVERYWHERE.\u00a0 In short, sanitizer is amazing.\u00a0 And, sanitizer at public, communal worship events makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, we are beset with an unintended consequence of our enlightened understanding of hygiene, and our own spritzing of antiseptic fluid on our hands before distributing (or receiving) communion.\u00a0 What hits our noses is not the sweet fragrance of the body of Christ\u2014but the hospital grade punch of aloe-infused ethyl alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>This assault on our olfactory senses has repercussions for our taste buds.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you, but when I get that sniff of hand sanitizer right before Eucharistic reception, my Jesus pretty much tastes like Purell.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60132 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hand-Sanitizer-Front-of-Church.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Is there a solution for this modern challenge?\u00a0 I\u2019m not advocating for a ban on sanitizer.\u00a0 But if the ritual matters, if our bodies matter, and if we come to know the living God through the very senses that were blessed by our baptism\u2026maybe there is a third way?
