The students to whom I teach Dante’s Divine Comedy<\/em>
\nare often surprised that in the lowest depth of Hell
\nDante places, not those who committed sexual sins
\n(which is what they expect from someone
\nwho lived in the prudish Middle Ages),
\nnor those who committed crimes of violence
\n(which is who most of them think deserve
\nthe most serious punishment),
\nbut rather those guilty of betrayal.
\nFor Dante, betrayal is the act that ends you up
\nin the deepest, coldest circle of Hell
\nbecause it is springs, not simply from
\na failure of reason to properly direct our desires,
\nthe ways that sins of lust and violence do,
\nbut from an abuse of the love and trust
\nthat others bear toward us.
\nYou can only betray someone who trusts you,
\nand to betray such trust is to exploit
\nthe most precious gift one person can give to another.
\nIt is the action that makes us most unlike God,
\nfor God is eternally faithful in love toward us,
\nand asks for nothing but faithful love in return.
\nAnd because it makes us most unlike God
\nit places us at the farthest distance from God.<\/p>\n

We all know the experience of betrayal
\nbecause we live in a world marked by betrayal.
\nIn the Biblical story of humanity\u2019s fall
\nwe find not only the disobeying of God\u2019s command
\nnot to eat from the tree in the garden
\nbut also a primal act of betrayal:
\n\u201cit is her fault; she made me do it.\u201d
\nWe all know betrayal,
\nand we know it from both sides:
\nwe have had our trust betrayed
\nbut we have also betrayed the trust of others.
\nPerhaps it is a seemingly trivial betrayal\u2014
\na small promise made but not kept\u2014
\nor perhaps it is a life-shattering breach of trust:
\na deceptive co-worker,
\na devious friend,
\na disloyal spouse.<\/p>\n

And the betrayal that pervades our world operates
\nnot just on an interpersonal level
\nbut on an institutional level.
\nMany today feel betrayed by our government,
\nby our educational and medical establishments,
\nby our Church.
\nSome, faced with crushing disappointments in life,
\nmay even feel betrayed by God
\nWe feel that there were
\npromises made
\nthat were not kept,
\nhopes held out
\nthat were not fulfilled,
\ntrust engendered
\nthat was not deserved.
\nWe may be tempted to adopt the view
\nthat trust is for suckers,
\nand the only way to avoid betrayal
\nis to hold yourself back
\nfrom trusting anyone or anything,
\nto protect yourself by sealing up your heart.<\/p>\n

Tonight puts us into the middle
\nof the story of history\u2019s greatest betrayal:
\nthe betrayal of the God who took flesh
\nfor us and for our salvation,
\nand whom we handed over
\nto suffering and death.
\nIn every celebration of the Eucharist
\nwe recall this night with these words:
\n\u201cFor on the night he was betrayed\u2026\u201d
\nJesus is betrayed by Judas with a kiss,
\nfor thirty pieces of silver.
\nJesus is betrayed by Peter and the other disciples,
\nwho had said that they would die with him,
\nbut then flee and hide and deny that they knew him.
\nJesus is betrayed by religious and political authorities,
\nwho claim to rule in the name of piety and justice,
\nbut show themselves instead to be ruled by fear
\nand by the desire for domination.
\nJesus is betrayed by the crowd,
\nwhich had rapturously greeted him
\nas he entered Jerusalem,
\nonly to call for his crucifixion a few days later.
\nIt seemed to some, even,
\nthat he has been betrayed by God:
\n\u201cHe trusts in God;
\nlet God deliver him now, if he wants to\u201d (Mt 27:43).<\/p>\n

In this midst of this scene of betrayal, however,
\nJesus does not hold himself back from trust,
\nbut rather leans into it,
\nknowing that the one whom he calls Father
\nremains faithful in his promises.
\nHe does not protect himself by sealing up his heart
\nbut opens his heart to us in love
\nso that water and blood might flow forth\u2014
\nthe water that washes our sins away,
\nthe blood that becomes our food and drink.
\nFor on the night he is betrayed,
\nthe night he is handed over by a friend
\nand abandoned by his followers,
\nhe takes bread and wine
\nand, giving thanks, hands himself over to us
\nin an act of loving self-abandonment:
\n\u201cThis is my body that is for you\u2026.
\nthis\u2026is the new covenant in my blood.\u201d
\nHe offers his own blood as the sign of covenant,
\nthe sign of promise in which we can trust,
\neven in the midst of betrayal.
\nIn the night that lies at the center
\nof the long, sad history of human betrayals,
\nJesus shows us that betrayal must be answered with love.
\nHe is not telling us to turn a blind eye to betrayal,
\nto ignore it or pretend it doesn\u2019t happen.
\nJesus knows Judas will betray him,
\nand lets him know that he knows.
\nBut still he washes his feet,
\nfor he also knows that if betrayals make us bitter
\nit is we who are defeated, not our betrayers.
\nThe only way to defeat betrayal
\nis through the reconciling power of love\u2014
\nnot our paltry human love,
\nwhich falters so in the face of betrayal,
\nbut the love that pour itself out
\ninto our hearts to wash away our bitterness,
\nthe fullness of charity and life
\nthat becomes our food and drink
\nin this banquet of Christ\u2019s love.<\/p>\n

In this night that he is betrayed,
\nJesus hands himself over to us
\nso that the power of divine love
\nthat carried him from betrayal
\nthrough the cross
\nto the resurrection
\nmight come to dwell in us as well.
\nEven in the midst of betrayal he invites us,
\ncome to the feast of love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
